2010 NCAA Football Predictions – Teams | Analysis | Previews Online
Conference USA Football Previews: Tulsa
Head Coach: Todd Graham
2009 Record: 5-7
Tulsa Gambling Odds from Sportsbook.com to win BCS: +140000
Tulsa has been a very successful football program over the last few years, but the 2009 season was definitely a down year for the Golden Hurricane. The offense wasn’t as productive as normal, and the defense couldn’t pick up the slack. The offense will return nine starters from a year ago, so most experts are guessing this team will be back to scoring quite a few points again.
Todd Graham has proven himself as a very good football coach, so I wouldn’t expect Tulsa to stay down for too long.

The running game really let the team down in 2009, as did the offensive line. The defense was actually the stronger unit last year for Tulsa, but they lose six starters so there will be a lot of new faces on that side of the football.
Team Strengths:
G.J. Kinne has a year of experience in this system and I fully expect him to have an improved campaign in 2010. Kinne is a dual-threat quarterback, and he actually led the team in rushing in 2009.
The wide receivers are a great group of guys that can get open on a consistent basis, and will make people miss once they get the football. Damaris Johnson may be the most talented player on the team, and I expect him to excel this year. Trae Johnson, A.J. Whitmore, and Jameel Owens should all contribute as well.
The linebackers are a great group of talented players. DeAundre Brown is extremely quick and gets in on all the action. Tanner Antle is another play maker at the linebacker spot for Tulsa. This is a very strong unit.
Team Weaknesses:
The offensive line was a huge weakness in 2009 as Tulsa ended up ranking near the bottom of all of college football in sacks allowed. Kinne is a play maker at quarterback, but this line absolutely has to give him time to make plays.
The secondary returns only two starters, which means they will be quite raw. Conference USA is full of teams who like to throw the football early and often, so this could be a real problem for Tulsa if the new guys don’t step up quickly.
Tulsa 2010-2011 Football Predictions: 8-5
The Golden Hurricane should definitely be a formidable opponent in 2010. I think the passing attack will be one of the best in the conference and the running game will be much better than a year ago. The defense will be average, but that should be plenty enough to beat most of the teams on their schedule.
I expect Kinne to have a big season at quarterback this year. Damaris Johnson should be getting a lot of attention from pro scouts this year. The key game on their schedule may well be their October 9th trip to SMU.
This team likely isn’t as good as Houston, but they could give SMU a tough fight if they put it all together. Tulsa should get to the post season once again this year.
