Coach: Mack Brown
2008 Record: 12-1

In a power struggle in the Big 12 South between the ‘Horns and the rival Oklahoma Sooners last season, Texas got the short end of the stick and was frozen out of playing Florida in the national title. If a similar situation arises this season (Texas and Oklahoma are far and away the best teams in the Big 12 in 2009) look for pollsters to award Texas’ patience.

Heisman finalist Colt McCoy returns for his senior season under center. McCoy set an NCAA record for completion percentage in 2008 at almost 77 percent. He also was the team’s number one rusher. Former quarterback prospect John Chiles moves to receiver in 2009, the unit will be buttressed by game-changing senior Jordan Shipley. Coach Brown always recruits highly-touted prospects on defense, and the proof is in the pudding.

While the defensive line must replace three NFL draft choices including first-rounder Brian Orakpo, Texas has talent waiting in the wings and its linebacker corps should eat people for lunch with seniors Sergio Kindle, Jared Norton and Rod Muckleroy.

Team Strengths
This team seems to be made of a strong constitution. In a disappointing 2007 season, Mack Brown declared every starting job open in bowl practices and consequently, Texas rolled Arizona State in the Holiday Bowl. In 2008, after being left out in the cold by the pollsters, Texas still beat Ohio State in the Fiesta Bowl.

Team Weaknesses
There are question marks on the defensive line. The defensive secondary, though possessing some game experience, is young (both projected starters at safety are sophomores). The Horns’ stable of running backs must produce more.

Texas is perennially one of the most talented teams in the country. Veteran field general McCoy is surely more determined than ever this time around, falling short in his national title and Heisman Trophy quests. The coaching staff puts the cards on the table when it matters. The only potential stumbling block on the regular-season slate is an Oct. 17 tilt against hated Oklahoma in Dallas.

2009 Texas Longhorns Record Prediction: 12-1
