How Cincy fares in this year’s Sugar Bowl is a perfect case study for those BCS naysayers out there. We have an unblemished team from the uninspiring Big East conference going up against a textbook SEC superpower.

Though West Virginia and Rutgers certainly isn’t LSU and Georgia, the Bearcats do not have a lack of firepower. Their offense kept rolling whether lanky star QB Tony Pike was under center or their back-up, baseball player-moonlighting as pivot Zach Collaros. Cincy wideout Mardy Gilyard is a beast, Armon Binns and D.J. Woods see plenty of supplementary balls.

Isaiah Pead and Jacob Ramsey do enough on the ground for the Bearcats to be multifaceted.

Cincy should be a little bummed after head coach Brian Kelly ran off to greener pastures and golden domes, but that may boost play rather than hinder it. For Florida, even with a season that was pedestrian by QB Tim Tebow’s standards, the offense did enough and the D was NFL-caliber. Until the SEC title game against Alabama. The Gators must rebound from that crappy performance and summon the strength to squash Cincinnati, which they most certainly can do from a talent perspective.

There’s been a similar brand of adversity in Gainesville with the stepping down/leave of absence/health concerns of Gator head coach Urban Meyer. If the teams use this flux for good rather than melancholy, a Sugar Bowl ticket will be worth every penny.

Cincinnati has its great attack and a competent defense, but expect an inspired game out of Tebow in his last as a collegian and expect LB Brandon Spikes, CB Joe Haden and the rest of the stupidly gifted Gator D to treat the Bearcats like an underpaid, understaffed maitre’d.

Expect this game to explain why the BCS is what it is, at the end of the day.
