Big East Schools 2010-2011 Football Previews: USF Bulls

Coach: Skip Holtz
2009 Record: 8-5

South Florida Gambling Odds from Sportsbook.com to win BCS: +10000

Things were looking good for the Bulls in 2009 when their phenomenal freshman athlete at quarterback, B.J. Daniels, almost single-handedly beat Florida State 17-7 and made the Seminoles rue the fact they didn’t recruit Daniels more assertively.

The Bulls rose to #21 in the rankings, but then sputtered against the conference big dogs and limped to a 3-4 conference record and the rather unimpressive (and now defunct) International Bowl.

In comes new head coach Skip Holtz, son of Notre Dame legend Lou and one with his own well-established track record at East Carolina. The emphasis has always been on speed at USF and Holtz has the reputation of squeezing every last drop out of his talent.

Hence, South Florida ought to be a dynamic, tricky competitor in the Big East in 2010.

Team Strengths:

Daniels can beat you with his arm or with his feet. He ran for nearly 800 yards and threw for just under 2,000 after taking over for the injured Matt Grothe in Week 3 last season. He has other speedy offensive players to utilize, such as RB Moise Plancher and WRs Sterling Griffin, Dontavia Bogan and A.J. Love.

The entire offensive line returns intact; the push will start with C Sampson Genus and RG Zach Hermann but the whole unit is quite adequate. On D, look out for redshirt freshman DE Ryne Giddins, who was one of the best pass-rushing prospects a couple years ago.

Further back in the defense, sophomore CB Kayvon Webster embodies everything a strong Floridian football player generally does.

Team Weaknesses:

Aside from Webster, the secondary is fairly useless – there wasn’t much production last year. Also, if Daniels were to go down with an injury, the depth at quarterback is woeful.

The defense loses its top four tacklers plus sackmaster Jason Pierre-Paul, so there’s bound to be some class of a drop-off.

2010-2011 USF Football Prediction: 9-4

Skip Holtz is an excellent coach and despite there being quite a bit of turnover on defense, the speed is there in droves, which is increasingly becoming important in the Big East (heavy with recruits from the state of Florida).

The Bulls have tough road games at Florida, West Virginia, Cincinnati and Miami-Fl, but USF could also pull an upset here or there, and a healthy Daniels should really progress as a passer.

Bulls fans just need to keep their fingers and toes crossed that Daniels doesn’t get bitten by the injury bug, because if that happens then USF’s hopes will be seriously derailed.
