Big East Schools 2010-2011 Football Previews: Rutgers Scarlet Knights

Coach: Greg Schiano
2009 Record: 9-4

Rutgers Gambling Odds from Sportsbook.com to win BCS: +10000

Head coach Greg Schiano has done an excellent job with this program in his decade tenure in New Jersey. Rutgers was a nobody program for years, literally a laughingstock of the FBS (then Division I-A) until five seasons ago.

These days, the Knights can snag a key recruit or two from the hallowed tri-state area and Schiano can use his in-state street cred (he’s a Jersey native) to reel in players that would have gone to Penn State or Pitt or Boston College previously.

The Big East is top-heavy in 2010 and it may not be Rutgers’ best season of record, but you can expect some consistency and some tough games from the Knights – a team that now seems to be annually in the conference discussion.

Team Strengths:

Quarterback Tom Savage is just a sophomore, but he has the requisites to be a great one. As a freshman, he threw for 2,211 yards with a 14-7 ratio. He has to improve his completion percentage, but Savage performed remarkably for a first-year player.

Other players that stand out on the offense include WR Mohamed Sanu (who, when under center, is a Wildcat threat) and 6”8, 310 lb RT Art Forst.

Defensive tackle Scott Vallone was a freshman All-American in ’09 and the linebacker corps behind him is in good shape with senior Antonio Lowery and junior Manny Abreu.

Senior P Teddy Dellaganna is also steady as a rock. Senior DE Jonathan Freeny is back, who racked up 9.5 sacks last season.

Team Weaknesses:

While there are individual studs on defense, Rutgers still loses five of its top six tacklers from last year. New faces must emerge and make their collective presence felt to avoid potent in-conference opponents from hanging points up on the Red Men.

Lanky freshman WR Brandon Coleman must replace Tim Brown, who contributed over 1,000 yards receiving and nearly double-digit TDs.

2010-2011 Rutgers Football Prediction: 8-5

Rutgers loses plenty from its defense and its offensive line, plus it only has three in-conference home games. These facts don’t bode well for a strong season, but the non-conference slate isn’t too devilish (North Carolina is the toughest game) and if Savage can progress at the rate he ought to, he has enough bits and pieces around him to make some noise.

If several new faces on the offensive line cannot do a solid job, everything could be ground to a halt.

All in all, the Knights should have a decent season and be playing in a bowl, but they should be thrilled if they grab another nine-win season.
