The Bulldogs knew what they were getting into when they saw a pair of top 10 teams on their schedule to open the season. The team will be playing in the weekend’s marquee matchup for the second consecutive week. Now they’re feeling the heat, having to beat a South Carolina team that has won each of the last three meetings between the teams if they hope to have a shot of making the national title game.

Georgia’s struggles against South Carolina coincide with the arrival of Aaron Murray in Athens. Murray completed 20-of-29 passes for 323 yards in a losing effort in Week 1. The team might have fared better if Todd Gurley hadn’t missed as much time as he did. Gurley earned SEC Offensive Player of the Week honors after rushing for a career-high 154 yards and two touchdowns on just 12 carries.

His thigh injury appears to be a thing of the past, and he should be ready to go at top speed in this one. The team did take a big hit in the contest though, as wide receiver Malcolm Mitchell suffered an ACL injury in the game that will end his season prematurely. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

Defensively, the Bulldogs struggled mightily, allowing 13 plays of 10+ yards. In total, Clemson racked up 467 yards of offense in the game. The team also didn’t help themselves by racking up nine penalties for 84 yards.

Things went a lot smoother for the Gamecocks in their opener. They scored the first 17 points in their rivalry game with North Carolina. In the end, that was enough for the win. Quarterback Connor Shaw threw an early 65-yard touchdown pass, but he finished the game only 11-of-20 for 149 yards, although he did add another 43 yards with his feet.

Mike Davis was the bell cow offensively. He piled up 115 yards on just 12 carries, adding a touchdown for good measure.

Defensively, the Gamecocks compiled three sacks, but none came from standout defensive end Jadeveon Clowney. The team did a good job of stopping the run, limiting the Tar Heels to just 99 yards on the ground and only one offensive touchdown.

Historically, this series has been one-sided in favor of the Bulldogs, who hold a 46-16-2 edge, but in recent years it’s been the Gamecocks who have been victorious, including a 35-7 win last season.

While the setting shifts back to Georgia, expect the result to stay the same.

The Gamecocks are 4-0 ATS in the last four meetings between these teams in Georgia.

The play: South Carolina +3
