Coach Gundy put any quarterback controversy talk to rest by naming Walsh his starting quarterback. Walsh came off the bench in Week 1 and racked up 135 passing yards and 125 rushing yards. Gundy expects Walsh to play the entire game this weekend, which would mean that fifth-year senior Clint Chelf would be relegated to the bench.

It was an uncharacteristic win for the always potent Cowboys, winning on the back of a strong defensive effort, holding Mississippi State to just three points in a 21-3 win. The Cowboys now take a big step down in class after last week’s battle with an SEC opponent. The team is 25-3 in their last 28 games against unranked opponents.

With the quarterback controversy settled, expect a better offensive showing from the Cowboys in this one. The offense certainly looked better with Walsh at the helm. Jeremy Smith should be in for another big day after rushing for 102 yards and two scores on 15 carries in the opener.

Defensively, the Cowboys limited Mississippi State to conversions on just 2-of-16 third down attempts, holding them to just 333 total yards of offense in the game. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

As for Texas-San Antonio, they’re riding high after overcoming a double-digit deficit to upset New Mexico on the road, 21-13, but could be in for a rude awakening when they take on Oklahoma State, the highest-ranked team they have ever faced. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

The Roadrunners moved the ball well in their opener, headlined by a 99-yard fourth quarter scoring drive to clinch their victory. Quarterback Eric Soza was 21-of-34 for 237 yards and two touchdowns while also adding 48 rushing yards.

Standout running back David Glasco III had only 40 total yards in the game but came up big in the clutch, hauling in an 11-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter to cap off that 99-yard drive.

The Roadrunners had a good game defensively against New Mexico, but they struggled last season when making the step up in competition.

The team allowed 247.8 yards per game in their first four contests of 2012, but allowed 445.8 yards per game in their final eight contests when their schedule got tougher.

With their quarterback situation settled, Oklahoma State shouldn’t have any trouble putting up points in this one, but expect Texas-San Antonio to get their fair share as well on their home turf.

The over is 10-2 in the Cowboys’ last 12 games in the month of September, and 5-1 in the Roadrunners’ last six non-conference games.
