Pittsburgh Panthers (5-1) v Rutgers Scarlet Knights (4-1)
Pittsburgh: 3-2 ATS / Rutgers: 1-2 ATS

The Pittsburgh Panthers will travel to Rutgers Stadium on Friday night to avenge a 54-34 defeat in last years match up at Pittsburgh.

Pitt has won two straight games including a 24-21 win against UConn at Heinz Field in their last outing. The Panthers trailed the Huskies by 16 points late in the third, but rallied for 18 points including 11 in the fourth to notch the come-from-behind victory. Senior QB Bill Stull tossed 268 yards, completing 21-of-31 passes for two TDs and two interceptions in the game.

The Panthers only loss came in Week 4 when they were defeated at North Carolina State, 31-38.

Pitt’s passing game continues to improve with Stull beginning to utilize all of his available targets including wide receiver Jonathan Baldwin and tight ends Dorin Dickerson and most recently against UConn—2008 All-Big East selection Nate Byham, while the defense remains solid for the most part, behind defensive back Ricky Gary and linebacker Adam Gunn.

After taking a pounding in their season opener to Cincinnati, the Scarlet Knights has won four straight games, thanks in large part to its defense that now has four defensive touchdowns through the season’s first five games.

The Scarlet Knights are coming off a blow out over Texas Southern 42-0 on Oct. 10, where the Rutgers defense held Texas Southern to negative-25 yards rushing, surpassing the minus-23 Cincinnati got in 2005.

Offensively, Rutgers is currently ranked 66th in the nation in total offense. Running back Jourdan Brooks has only 236 yards on 51 carries, while counterpart Joe Martinek may have edged out Brooks for the No. 1 position posting 411 yards on 75 carries.

Pitt vs. Rutgers Odds

The Panthers is –3 point favorites in Fridays match up.

Panthers vs. Scarlet Knights Free Pick

Pittsburgh has played a competitive schedule while Rutgers’ record has been built against some softer teams. If the Panthers play like they did against UConn in the last 20 minutes, there is no way Rutgers will win, that being said if they play like they did the first 40 minutes, Rutgers has a solid chance.

One reply on “Pittsburgh Panthers vs. Rutgers Scarlet Knights Preview | Pick”

Despite a tough loss in week 4 to NC State, Pitt is still a solid team and should be in the thick of things for the Big East Title. Rutgers is 4-1, but I do not think they are as talented as the Panthers. This game comes down to making plays and Pitt makes a few more that the Knights.
