Wake Forest Demon Deacons (2-4)

The Wake Forest Demon Deacons have pulled the Boston College routine this season. They scored 107 points over their first two games, both victories, but have lost four straight since then. It hasn’t been pretty. They’ve allowed 68, 31, 24 and 28 points in those losses and got shut out at Florida State on September 25.

Tanner Price has been somewhat serviceable at quarterback; at least he has more touchdown passes (five) than interceptions (three). The Demon Deacons’ running-back-by-committee has combined to give them the ACC’s fourth most rushing yards but still lacks that true bell cow that can handle every-down duty. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

We can’t sugar coat Wake Forest’s defense, however. It ranks second last in the conference in total defense and scoring defense, allowing more than 35 points per game.

Virginia Tech Hokies (4-2)

Virginia Tech’s season has been the inverse of Wake Forest’s. The Hokies had a nightmarish start, going 0-2 and losing to James Madison, but have rolled ever since. Their offense has gotten the job done better than some pundits expected this year. Tyrod Taylor has made plays with his feet as always, rushing for 449 yards and two scores, but he also has nine touchdown passes and just three interceptions. Darren Evans has excelled in his return to feature back duty, averaging 6.3 yards per carry and scoring five touchdowns.

Defensively, the Hokies have slipped a bit in 2010. Even during their four-game winning streak, they’ve allowed 21 or more points three times.

The pick:

This looks like a blowout all the way. Even if VT’s defense has taken a step back, it’s still third-best in the ACC against the run. That means the Hokies should neutralize Wake Forest’s run-first offense. On the other side of the ball, Virginia tech has scored 41 or more points in three of its last four games and now gets a home game against a horrific defensive unit. Yep, this will be ugly.
