Notre Dame

The Fighting Irish of Notre Dame lost a heartbreaker last weekend at home against Michigan. Now they travel to East Lansing to take on the Spartans of Michigan State. Brian Kelly’s team needs to use this as a great opportunity to get back on track quickly.

Dayne Crist was injured in the first half of last week’s game and the Fighting Irish looked lost without him under center. This weekend it appears Crist will be back starting at the quarterback spot. Notre Dame is implementing the spread offense as per Brian Kelly’s style, and that takes some getting used to, but Crist appears to have a pretty solid handle on it already.

The offensive line is an area of concern for the team since they have just two starters back from a year ago and there is very little depth here. Kyle Rudolph is one of the best tight ends in the country and he will help Crist and the offense immensely this year. Armando Allen is a nice versatile runner as well. The skill positions are strong, but the line needs to hold their own.

The Notre Dame defense has been the weak link for this team the last few years, and it will probably be again this year. Having said that, I do believe this defense is better than it has been in the past few seasons. Denard Robinson running for 258 yards last weekend was a really bad sign for the run defense, but the secondary appears solid. Don’t expect huge things from this unit, but some improvement is likely. Michigan State

Michigan State was a popular dark horse pick in the Big Ten among many experts this year. Their schedule in conference is much easier than most and they have a nice collection of talent on their team. So far the team hasn’t been tested, but this game will give us a better idea of whey they are right now.

Kirk Cousins is the leader of this offense and he has developed into a solid quarterback who makes wise decisions with the football. The Spartans receivers aren’t as talented as some years in the past, but Mark Dell is a reliable guy on the outside. The real strength of this offense appears to be the running game.

Edwin Baker and Le’Veon Bell are both talented backs and this offensive line is doing a great job of creating some big holes. The Spartans offense hasn’t fired on all cylinders yet this year, but this is a dangerous offense.

The Spartans defense is intriguing because they have one of the best players in the Big Ten in Greg Jones manning the middle linebacker spot, but they do have a very weak secondary. The Spartans are already looking solid against the run this year, but both Western Michigan and Florida Atlantic have put up a lot of passing yards on this team.

This defense will likely need to really get after the quarterback this year to try to take pressure off their secondary.

The Pick:

The Michigan State Spartans really need a high-profile win to get this program back in the spotlight, and while Notre Dame isn’t a ranked team right now, a win over Notre Dame always earns a team some attention. I think Michigan State will run the ball very effectively here and control the line of scrimmage on both sides of the football.

I like the Spartans -3.

Notre Dame vs. Michigan State Score Prediction: Michigan State 28 Notre Dame 20
