Vanderbilt

The Vanderbilt Commodores have a long season ahead of them.  Robbie Caldwell was thrown into the coaching position here just a few weeks before the season and he appears to have this team playing hard, but they just don’t have the talent that their opponents have.

The Commodores offense looked decent in their season opener against Northwestern, but they were horrific last weekend against LSU. Vanderbilt mustered only 65 yards on the ground the entire game and 135 total yards. They were 2 for 13 on third down conversions and fumbled the football four times. Going into the season we knew that Vanderbilt’s passing game would be weak, but it is very bad news for them if they can’t run the football. The problem for them in this one will be that the Rebels of Mississippi have a great defensive front.

The Vanderbilt defense has been very good against the pass so far this year, but they have been surprisingly bad against the run. LSU absolutely tore up this defense for 280 yards on the ground last weekend. Chris Marve and the linebackers are very solid, but it seems that the front four aren’t getting enough done right now. If Vanderbilt is going to stay in these SEC games they absolutely need their defense to step up and play well.

Mississippi College Football

The Mississippi Rebels started the season with a terrible loss at home against Jacksonville State from the FCS Division. The team had absolutely no business losing that game, and while they bounced back to beat Tulane last week, they were far from impressive in doing so.

The Rebels offense is led by former Oregon Duck, Jeremiah Masoli. Masoli is still getting used to the Rebels offense and they will certainly improve offensively, but the fan base is definitely concerned right now. Brandon Bolden and Enrique Davis had trouble running the football against a terrible Tulane defense, which certainly doesn’t speak highly of the Rebels running attack. Ole Miss finished with 92 yards rushing against a Tulane defense that ranked among the worst in the country at stopping the run last year. There is no star receiver, but there are plenty of guys that are solid and capable of getting the job done. The offensive line needs to improve for the Rebels to reach their goals this year.

The defensive unit appears to be the strength of this team. Specifically, the defensive line is full of NFL talent. Jerrell Powe is a beast at the defensive tackle spot, and the Rebels have the ultra-talented Kentrell Lockett at the defensive end position. There shouldn’t be many offensive lines that can push around this defensive front. The cornerbacks are inexperienced and the entire secondary is a bit of a weakness. The Rebels will count on their defensive front to pressure the quarterback and take the heat off the secondary.

The Pick:

I’m not a big fan of the way Mississippi has been playing, but I just don’t see Vanderbilt getting hardly anything done on offense in this one. Vanderbilt has to be able to run the ball on offense to be successful, and Mississippi’s defensive front should be too much for them to handle. I think Masoli and the offense will do enough in this one to help the Rebels cover the 11.5 points against a weak Vanderbilt team.

Vanderbilt vs. Mississippi Score Prediction: Mississippi 27 Vanderbilt 10
