Samford Bulldogs

Not many bettors know much about a little school like Samford but here’s a fun fact: new Florida State head coach Jimbo Fisher was once a quarterback there.

The Bulldogs had a modest 2009 season, going 5-6. They had a few bright spots – most notably running back Chris Evans, who churned out 1,152 yards last year and ran for seven scores. Quarterback Dustin Taliaferro took a back seat, throwing for just 1,692 yards and nine touchdowns all season.

Samford’s defense was its strong suit last season, allowing a respectable 17.5 points per game. The Bulldogs made a surprisingly solid showing against Central Florida last year, losing 28-24, but they have a tough test on the road against Florida State’s improving offense. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

Florida State Seminoles

The post-Bobby Bowden era begins Saturday. Jimbo Fisher has big shoes to fill after Bowden was the Seminoles’ man for 35 years and hopes are high for a team expected to improve on its 7-6 showing last season.

Defensively, Florida State is a work in progress at best. It had the nation’s 108th-ranked defense in 2009, allowing a hideous 434.6 yards and 30.0 points per game. It will still take its lumps with a shaky secondary on the field this season.

But things are looking up for the Seminoles offensively. Christian Ponder, now a senior, is a Heisman Trophy hopeful. He separated his shoulder last year but threw for 2,717 yards and 14 touchdowns with seven interceptions in his nine games played. Ponder is missing a couple of his top wideouts from last season but he has a veteran offensive line surrounding him and he’s arguably a first-round NFL talent that can make everyone around him better.

The pick:

While it’s true that FSU’s defense will get torched more than a few times this season, I doubt Samford is the team to do it. The Bulldogs will put a small handful of points on the board but are probably in over their heads against Ponder and the Seminoles’ offense. Expect a predictable blowout win for Florida State, which will play with extra emotion as it turns over a new leaf to start the Jimbo Fisher era.

Samford vs Florida State prediction: Florida State 40, Samford 13
