Big East Schools 2010-2011 Football Previews: Syracuse Orange

Coach: Doug Marrone
2009 Record: 4-8

Syracuse Gambling Odds from Sportsbook.com to win BCS: +10000

Despite some legendary names – Jim Brown, Larry Czonka, Donovan McNabb and Marvin Harrison to name a few – passing through upstate New York at one point or another, Syracuse has been a garbage program for some time now. Doug Marrone seemed to be changing the team’s attitude in his first season and the Orange may finally be once again on the upswing.

Of course, ’Cuse fans cannot expect the world, so improvement in a challenging conference is absolutely a step forward in Marrone’s second year at the helm.

Team Strengths:

The Orange returns a strong running game this season. Senior RB Delone Carter gained 1,021 yards and 11 majors in 2009, and junior Antwon Bailey is also very effective behind him (312 yards and a score in only 67 totes). Hopefully, some JUCO additions on the offensive line can buttress C Ryan Bartholomew for a capable unit.

Syracuse’s defense is probably the strength of the team, particularly at linebacker and in the secondary. Senior Doug Hogue garnered all-conference honors last season and the secondary is in sure hands behind returning seniors Mike Holmes, Max Suter and Da’Mon Merkerson.

If sophomore DE Chandler Jones continues to develop, the overall defense should be relatively beastly.

Team Weaknesses:

The receiver corps loses Mike Williams, last year’s leader and there isn’t a lot of playmaking pizzazz behind him. Junior Marcus Sales was a regarded recruit out of high school, but he must put it all together. There is also a new field general in the form of sophomore Ryan Nassib. Syracuse rolled out former Duke hoops star Greg Paulus to play the position in ’09; he perhaps should’ve stayed on the hardwood.

Still, Nassib is an unknown and must impress people for the Orange’s attack to be anything other than one-dimensional.

2010-2011 Syracuse Football Prediction: 5-7

Syracuse is an improved team in 2010, there’s no question about it. Yet, much of the same can be said for several others in the Big East. The Orange draw Washington and Boston College out of conference – not gimme games by any means.

Marrone’s rejuvenated crew are capable of pulling a big upset, but they’d probably have to pull more than one in order to win more than five games.

Hey, Rome wasn’t built in a day.
