Bill Stull, Dion Lewis and the rest of the Steel Town faithful will take a trip south, hoping to dispatch the home state UNC Tar Heels in a game that’s effectively a home game for them; a short jaunt on the Interstate from Chapel Hill to Charlotte.
It is precisely those aforementioned guys – QB Stull and freshman RB Lewis – that will have to ramp their game up against a terrific Carolina defense. Lewis has proved he’s the elite back in the Big East conference and indeed one of the best of the country, finishing third in the FBS in rush yards per game (136.7) and adding 16 majors.
He’ll need to use every bit of his elusiveness as the Tar Heel D is reaping the benefits of a couple very strong recruiting classes under head coach Butch Davis.
Sackmaster Robert Quinn and stalwarts DT Marvin Austin and LB Quan Sturdivant will doubtlessly raise Stull’s blood pressure.
The Tar Heels had some nice wins and some ugly losses in 2009, Pitt’s chances should hinge on which brand of Carolina football shows up to play. After a one-point loss to Tobacco Road rival NC State in the last week of the season, UNC should be looking to get that bitter taste out of its mouth. However, Lewis can take over the game and eat the clock, and veteran Stull isn’t a weak link either.
In a close contest, look for how the Panthers move the ball on the ground to determine who winds up on top.
With Lewis’ earlier body of work, the safe bet is that he – and the NFL’s namesake – will be successful.
