Houston Cougars vs. UAB Blazers Week 10 Free Pick

Houston Cougars vs UAB Blazers

The Houston Cougars are still perfect, slowly climbing that BCS ladder.  They are still a long shot to make it to one of the big games but it would be interesting to see if a top defense like that played in the SEC could stop this Cougars attack.

Legion Field – Birmingham, AL
Saturday November 5 – 7:00PM
Moneyline:  Houston -7000, UAB +3000
Spread (ATS): Houston -28
Over/Under: 73

Houston

They have been sizzling lately matching last week’s O/U total all by themselves…by the way it was a whopping 73 points.

Case Keenum and the Cougars offense exploded last week.  Keenum threw for an astounding 9 touchdowns with Patrick Edwards catching 5 of them.  Edwards also scored 318 yards receiving as Houston overcame a sluggish start to just decimate Rice.  I am not sure that UAB will fare much better this week, watching the game film might have done more harm than good.

The spreads keep getting larger but that is to be expected when a team owns the top offense in the country.  The number is a full 4 TDs this week which is a lot to give up when backing a team that doesn’t have a top defense but Houston has won their last 3 games by 53, 35, and 39 points.  I would probably stay away from this one but not because they aren’t capable of covering the number.

UAB

The UAB Blazers have only one win and just lost by 45 to Marshall so I am physically afraid to see what Houston might do to them.  This is clearly a lost season in Birmingham but they have been more competitive at home.  That is a very relative description, this team lost by 39 points to Tulane back on week 2.  I am not sure the Green Wave have scored 39 points since. UAB is one of the worst teams in FBS right now.  Senior QB Bryan Ellis was supposed to provide some hope for the season but he was horrible and is now out for the year with a hand injury.  Replacement Jonathan Perry hasn’t been much better with the lone exception being a 300 yard performance against UCF.  UCF is usually the best defensive team in the conference so the kid has showed he has some upside…maybe.

With the way Houston scores points this one could get ugly…and in a hurry.  The Blazers have been blown out several times this season and this feels like another one.  The series history shows that UAB hasn’t always been so bad but not a single one of the previous 7 games between these two teams has finished as close as 10 points.  That streak should continue.

ATS Pick:  Houston -28
Over/Under Pick:  Over
Score Prediction:  Houston 63 – UAB 24
