Handicapping AP Top 25: NCAA Football Top 10 – Week 7 Betting Preview

Week 7 AP Top 25

A chaotic week in college football led to a completely jumbled AP poll on Sunday, with many teams swapping spots, and some big name programs moving out of the poll altogether, including LSU and USC.

The big mover of the week was Arizona, which moved up to No. 10 after previously being unranked. The Wildcats pulled off a major upset in the national spotlight on Thursday, knocking off No. 2 Oregon in Eugene.

Losses for some of the nation’s top programs, notably Oregon, former No. 3 Alabama, former No. 4 Oklahoma, and former No. 6 Texas A&M led to some big changes at the top, with Auburn humping three spots to No. 2, while the weekend’s big winners, Mississippi State and Ole Miss, moved into a tie for third.

1. Florida State Seminoles (5-0, previous: 1)

The Seminoles haven’t showed that winning pedigree that made them so dangerous. The team lost a lot of parts in the offseason after claiming the national championship a year ago. The running game and defense have clearly taken big steps backward.

The Seminoles were finally able to build up a margin against an opponent, even if it was just Wake Forest. They get Syracuse this weekend.

2. Auburn Tigers (5-0, previous: 5)

Auburn has been one of the top teams in football, throttling opponents with the exception of a trip to Manhattan, and even that was a good win. Even with a big win over LSU on the weekend, the Tigers needed the teams in front of them to fall, and they got that this week, but they get thrown right back into the fire with a date against Mississippi State this weekend.

T3. Mississippi State (5-0, previous: 12)

It’s impossible to ignore the Bulldogs now. Mississippi State’s win over Texas A&M on the week has helped propel the team into a tie for No. 3 in the AP poll. Quarterback Dak Prescott is looking like the best quarterback in the SEC.

T3. Ole Miss Rebels (5-0, previous: 11)

The Rebels are getting strong play on both sides of the football, picking up a solid team win over Alabama on the weekend. Quarterback Bo Wallace doesn’t get the national attention he deserves, but he’s been highly effective for the team.

5. Baylor Bears (5-0, previous: 7)

Baylor’s win over Texas wasn’t nearly as pretty as the final score would indicate. Bryce Petty’s completion percentage was sickeningly low, and there are some that wonder just how healthy he actually is. The team will need to be more efficient on offense if they hope to get by their next opponent: No. 9 TCU.

6. Notre Dame Fighting Irish (5-0, previous: 9)

The Irish needed a big win to add to their resume and they got it with a narrow victory over Stanford on the weekend. Notre Dame has just been a completely different squad with Everett Golson under center. He would deserve to win the Heisman if the season ended today.

Next up is a date with North Carolina as 17-point favorites.

7. Alabama Crimson Tide (4-1, previous: 3)

Of each of the big four teams inside the top six to lose over the weekend, Alabama’s fall was the shortest – from No. 3 to No. 7. The Tide still have some big games in front of them and can earn a spot in the inaugural College Football Playoff with an impressive close out to their season. Next up: Arkansas.

8. Michigan State Spartans (4-1, previous: 10)

The Spartans nearly let one slip through their fingers against Nebraska, but they were able to hold on for the victory and that allows them to move up two spots to No. 10. The team is running the ball well and playing solid defense, while getting solid quarterback play from Connor Cook.

9. TCU Horned Frogs (4-0, previous: 25)

TCU certainly picked the right week to pull off a big upset, catapulting into the top 10 after re-appearing in the rankings just last week.

[dfads params=’groups=63739&limit=1&return_javascript=0′]

They’ll have a chance to continue to boost their resume Saturday when they visit Baylor as double-digit underdogs.

10. Arizona Wildcats (5-0, previous: NR)

No spot led to more head-scratching this week than Arizona’s inclusion in the national top 10. Despite only the one win over a quality opponent, and difficulties against lesser squads like Texas-San Antonio and Cal, Arizona goes from unranked to No. 10.

That they’re a home underdog this week against an unranked USC team is all anyone needs to know about this ranking.
