They have to show a little heart to avoid finishing the season in a complete slump however; the visiting Chicagoans would like to make that a reality.

It was a great start to the year for the Irish, as a shutout of rival Michigan and victories over Stanford and North Carolina showed. Yet, the Golden Domers came back to Earth in a way where it appeared, somehow, they would.

The Irish aren’t playing for national accolades any longer, but their pride still is at stake. The Wildcats – as another strong academic institution in the nearby Big Ten and on the shores of the Great Lakes, has always been a natural rival.

Northwestern lost by a mere point to Michigan last week but on talent alone, Notre Dame should be able to handle them.

If the Irish have been mortally wounded and mail it in the rest of the campaign, the game could be closer than you might think, but you’d expect the Irish to take care of business in South Bend.

People aren’t touting Irish QB Everett Golson for the Heisman any longer, but he’s still had an excellent bounce-back season. His connection to sophomore WR William Fuller has been legendary (52 receptions, 694 yards, 10 TDs).

Notre Dame also features LB Jaylon Smith, who is one of the best athletes at his position in the country. He’s good for at least a couple of “wow” plays every game.

The Wildcats put freshman RB Justin Jackson to work straight away, as he’s amassed a workmanlike 761 yards on 175 totes. Putting some tread on the tires early, that’s for sure.

Northwestern also plays some inspired defense, as evidenced by its 30th-overall ranking nationally in scoring “D” (22.3 points per).

Still, a 3-6 record overall and 2-4 inside the conference is nothing to write home about.

Northwestern’s offense has scored just 16 points over its last two games (versus Iowa and the Wolverines) so the offense must discover some magic if the Wildcats are to have any measure of success on the road.

Golson should victimize a respectable Wildcats “D” and LB Smith should be tearing into the backfield, making life miserable for Jackson and N’western QB Trevor Siemian.

If everything goes according to plan, the Irish should procure their eighth win on the campaign and be able to turn their focus towards their remaining opponents, Louisville and historic rival USC.
