The two Big Ten West division teams have navigated their weak schedule quite well, which makes Saturday afternoon a big showdown – at least within the conference.

These two ballclubs have had strong seasons almost singularly because of the running back position.

Nebraska and Wisconsin have two of the best in the business at the collegiate level – Ameer Abdullah for the ‘Huskers and Melvin Gordon for the Badgers. Both are (or were) Heisman Trophy candidates, until Abdullah sustained a knee injury two weeks ago.

Nebraska’s bell-cow has been wearing a supportive brace on his knee and is listed as probable for this weekend’s game, which is bad news for the home team.

Abdullah was racking up TDs at an ungodly rate (17 through eight games, to go with two receiving scores) and what sort of form he is in becomes crucial to Nebraska’s chances in Madison.

Wisconsin has their own talisman in the junior Gordon, who combines with Chase Clement and a massive offensive line to form the top RB duo in the country, and arguably the best pure running attack in the college game.

Gordon is on the Heisman shortlist and, being over 1,500 yards rushing with 19 total TDs and ripping off 7.6 yards per carry, you can see why.

This is boiling down to: There will not be an excess of passing in Wisconsin this weekend. Good, ole-fashioned Big Ten football, indeed.

I like Wisconsin in this game for a few reasons. Firstly, the Badgers pair a lethal running game with a stingy defense; the “D” ranks third in the nation surrendering only 14.3 points per contest (albeit with a diluted Big Ten slate).

Secondly, the fans at Camp Randall are nuts. They are football-mad in the state of Wisconsin (ask anyone who’s been near a Lambeau Leap) and they are some of the loudest in the Big Ten on Saturday in Madison. The fans know it’s a big game with implications, so they’ll be out in force.

Finally – and perhaps penultimately – Gordon is in better health than Abdullah. People always talk about how RBs are a dime-a-dozen in the NFL these days, but in the college game, a great tailback is still a game-changer.

These are two of the best, who should both be impressive pro contributors, but the fact that Gordon is more likely to spin than Abdullah in the finite timeframe of this weekend, obviously makes a huge difference.

So far Nebraska has one blemish on its record and Wisconsin has two, but this is a key tie-break in the Big Ten West nearing the end of the regular season, so throw the overall record out the window.

In a big game, look for Gordon and Clement to carry the home side to a narrow victory.
