Pac 12 Week 10: 2011 Trojans vs. Buffaloes Preview & Prediction

Southern Cal Trojans vs CU Buffaloes NCAA Football Odds

The 6-2 USC Trojans lost in devastating fashion a week ago. They’ll look to right the ship this week in Boulder against the Colorado Buffaloes. Everyone else seems to be doing it, so why not USC?

When: Friday, 9:00 PM EST
Where: Folsom Field, Boulder, CO
TV: ESPN, ESPN 3D, ESPN3
LINE: +21.5 (Colorado), O/U 56.5

The Trojans’ South division title hopes took a bit of a hit last weekend. Now they match up with the team that division leaders Arizona State knocked off just a week ago. The Colorado Buffaloes have been the team that fixes all that is wrong this season.

Although USC may not feel as though they have any fixing to do after taking, arguably the best team in the country, to three overtimes this past weekend. The still need some finishing work as they narrowly missed winning it in regulation due to poor clock management and an untimely fumble.

Nevertheless, the Trojans have to feel good about themselves after that performance. But, if they want to keep up in PAC 12 south race, they have to beat Colorado, as the Trojans remaining schedule pits them against Washington, Oregon, and UCLA to end the season.

If they expect to win this one, quarterback Matt Barkley will have to keep up his good work. The entire USC offense relies on him to make big plays, while limiting mistakes. They have no running game to speak of, and have thrown the ball at least 30 times per outing all season long. He has also surpassed the 40 attempt mark on several occasions. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

With all of that work, Barkley sports a top 20 quarterback rating. He has 22 touchdowns to just five interceptions and has passed for nearly 2300 yards this far in the season.

As for Colorado, they continue to struggle in their new home–the PAC 12 conference—and are the only team without a conference win now that Utah picked theirs up this past weekend.

There is a good reason, as they just flat out aren’t a good football team. Their “strength” is the passing game, and that barely lies in the top 50 nationally. I’m not sure if that qualifies as a strength for a BCS team.

They rank in the bottom ten for rushing yards per game, points scored per game, and points allowed per game. The Buffaloes also sit in the bottom 35 in passing and rushing yards allowed this season, so the defense doesn’t really give them a real good shot at winning games either.

Matt’s Prediction: USC 42 Colorado 14-
There is little reason to believe that Colorado’s play is going to pickup this Friday. Unless USC has a meltdown of massive proportions, we’re looking at another blowout against Colorado this week. For those looking at Colorado anyways, they are 102nd in passing yards allowed this season. A small, glimmer of hope for the Buffs.
