Pac 12 Week 13: UCLA vs. USC Preview & Prediction

UCLA Bruins vs USC Trojans NCAA Football Odds

The UCLA Bruins can clinch the Pac-12 South with a win over cross-town rival the AP No. 10 Southern California Trojans at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum on Saturday.

Bruins v Trojans
Venue/Stadium: Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, Los Angeles, California
Time/Date: 10:00 PM ET, Saturday, November 26, 2011, FSN
NFL Odds From: Betonline.com
Spread (ATS): USC -14
Over/Under: 58.5

But that’s easier said than done as the Trojans will be riding high after their huge 38-35 upset of the now No. 10 Oregon Ducks at Autzen Stadium last weekend.

However, one thing I am sure Rick Neuheisel and his Bruins have been studying during the video reviews is how the Trojans nearly blew a 24-point second-half lead.

After the Boys from Troy rocked the Ducks by jumping out to a 21-7 lead on three touchdowns from junior quarterback Matt Barkley, Oregon, which saw its 21-game home winning streak end, trailed 38-14 with 4:07 left in the third quarter.

But the Eugene Machine shifted their no-huddle offense into high gear as De’Anthony Thomas sparked the Ducks’ rally with a 96-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. That kind of team speed almost led the Ducks all the way back, but a missed 47-yard field goal attempt couldn’t send it to overtime.

Meanwhile, the Bruins are riding their own high as they scored touchdowns on two of their first three plays from scrimmage on the way to hammering visiting Colorado 45-6 on Saturday. It was the most points they’ve scored since Sept. 1, 2007, when they also had 45 in a win over Stanford. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

Quarterback Kevin Prince threw a career-best four touchdown passes and UCLA racked up 553 yards of total offense. Prince was 15-of-19 for 225 yards, including a 54-yard scoring pass on his first throw of the night to sophomore Shaquelle Evans.

Also reaching the end zone was junior RB Jonathan Franklin and sophomore RB Malcom Jones as senior PK Tyler Gonzalez punched home a 22-yard FG.

With the win, the Bruins became bowl-eligible and remains atop the Pac-12 South division. They can also earn a spot in the PAC 12 inaugural conference championship game with a win against rival USC in their season finale.

But the Bruins won’t have history on their side , as USC leads the all-time series 45-28-7 including a 28-14 victory last year.

Matt’s Prediction: USC 38, UCLA 24–

UCLA is 4-0 in Pac-12 home games this year, but the Bruins’ only road conference win came at a dreadful Oregon State.

Coupled with the fact that UCLA has been clobbered by at least 25 points during their last three road tilts, I am going with the Trojans here as they post a 10-win season for the eighth time in 10 years, and for the 25th time in school history.
