Both the Wildcats and Sun Devils suffered key losses in this offseason. While Arizona State lost 2-time Defensive Player of the Year Will Sutton, Weber State let their head coach.
Sutton was replaced by a slew of young defenders while the Wildcats tabbed longtime Utah assistant Jay Hill to take over.
Weber State
It was an ugly season for the Wildcats, only winning one conference game. Bringing in Jay Hill could be the fix the team needs to make a quick turnaround.

Coming from a defensive background, Hill is attempting to chage the landscape of the Weber State defense that gave up over 70 points in each of its two FBS games last season.
The team is returning 7 starters on both offense and defense. The biggest news on offense is that starting RB Bo Bolen is returning after leading the Wildcats in rushing last season with 549 yards and 5 touchdowns as well as returning 11 kicks for 292 yards and a score.

On defense, the biggest returning name is Senior CB Deon’tae Florence. Last season, Florence had 4 intereceptions and 8 pass defenses for a weak Wildcat defense.
This year, Florence landed on the preseason All-Big Sky Team.
Arizona State
While the Sun Devils can put up points in a hurry, the team has largely been known for the stout defense behind Will Sutton. With nine (yes, NINE) defensive starters gone, the team known for defense is going to have to re-tool their roster. And they did, overhauling the defensive depth with young talent.
Arizona State took the Pac-12 by storm last season, winning the Pac-12 South title easily. Despite their defensive changes, the team is still primed at a run at the South title once again.
This is largely due to the return of starting QB Taylor Kelly, who threw for 3,635 yards and 28 touchdowns last season.
Kelly will look to connect again with his top receiver from last season – Jaelen Strong – who racked up 1,122 yards receiving and 7 touchdowns. And while RB Marion Grice is now in the NFL, D.J. Lewis and Deantre Lewis will look to fill his shoes. Last season, the offense ranked 10th in the country in scoring. This year should be similar.
