San Diego State Aztecs vs. Washington Huskies Preview

Washington is not ranked, but they still have high hopes this season since they return QB Keith Price, who is an early season Heisman favorite. San Diego State was decent last season going 6-6 before losing to Baylor in the Alamo Bowl. However, their QB is now trying to make it to the Cardinals and their new signal caller is an inexperienced one. NCAAF lines have Washington as a 14.5-point favorite with a total of 56.5.

Washington plays a huge game facing 3rd ranked LSU in their 2nd game of the season and they cannot overlook SDSU in this season opener.

While Prize returns under center the Huskies lost their top 2 WR and star RB Chris Polk. The Huskies do have talent coming in at the skill positions, but not the guys that carried them last season. Still, Price will be facing a SDSU passing defense that lost some players and ranked 57th in the nation last season.

Jesse Callier takes over for Polk and last season he rushed for 264 yards with 1 TD. He did not rack up a ton of yards, but he averaged 5.9 yards per carry. The run defense is the big concern for SDSU, as they only return one starting defensive lineman.

Ryan Lindley had a solid season for SDSU last season and while he is no longer in sunny San Diego and ex Oregon State QB Ryan Katz takes over. He has some solid weapons in WR’s Colin Lockett and Dylan Denso, TE Gavin Escobar and USC senior transfer Brice Butler. One question for this game is will Katz have time to find his targets. The Huskies have a decent pass rush and the Aztecs only return 2 starting offensive lineman. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

Adam Muema and Walter Kazee take over for 2-time Mountain West rushing champion Ronnie Hillman. They may be counted on to block more in this game if their young line cannot keep UW out of the backfield.

Washington’s concern is still on defense and while they have some good players coming in they struggled past season ranking 93rd in the nation defending the pass and 76th in defending the run.

In some betting trends for this non-conference match up SDSU is 2-5 ATS in their last 7 games overall, 1-4 ATS in their last 5 non-conference games, and they have an Under record of 4-1 in their last 5 road games.

Washington is 5-1 ATS in their last 6 home games, 1-4-1 ATS in their last 6 games against teams from the Mountain West Conference, and they have an Over record of 5-1 in their last 6 non-conference games.

Jason’s Pick: SDSU was pretty good last year, but that was last year and even though UW lost some key players they have a lot of young talent coming in and they will win this game and cover the spread.
