Arizona State

The Arizona State Sun Devils may be ranked lower than the Bruins entering Week 13, but they’re one-and-a-half point favorites with the contest just a few days away. ASU has the lead over UCLA and the USC Trojans for the division by one game, making this as important of a game as it has had all year.

With this game approaching, the Sun Devils are riding a six-game winning streak against conference competition. Their only losses are to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and the then-No. 5 Stanford Cardinal, which is why they’ve remained nationally relevant all year for the first time in a while.

On the season, Arizona State is 10th in scoring at 42.3 points per game. It is 22nd in passing with 292.6 yards per contest, and 55th in rushing at 182.7 per outing. Defensively, ASU is allowing just 24.4 points per game, which is good enough for 45th in the nation.

These may just sound like numbers to those who are casually watching, but there’s one very important thing to note: Those numbers aren’t too far off from UCLA’s averages, which should cause for a close game on Saturday.

UCLA

If this weekend’s battle in Pasadena ends up being a close one, the question becomes: Who has the edge? First a foremost, consider home-field advantage. ASU’s only conference loss on the year was on the road—a 14-point loss to Stanford—and the Bruins haven’t lost a home game in nearly an entire calendar year.

Let’s also consider some recent trends. Arizona State is just 2-8 against the spread in its last 10 meetings with UCLA, while the Bruins are 7-3 against the spread in their last 10 games overall.

Arizona State has been very good lately defensively, but it’s the offense that will need a better showing against UCLA. Against Oregon State, Taylor Kelly (QB, ASU) had just 183 yards throwing with zero touchdowns and two interceptions. A big reason for this is the team’s blocking up front. The Sun Devils have allowed eight sacks in their last two outings, which is something the Bruins will look to exploit early and often.

Since losing to Stanford and Oregon in consecutive weeks, the Bruins have scored at least 30 points per contest in each game. Additionally, the score has gone over the projected number seven out of UCLA’s last eight games. ASU also has a tendency go over the projected score, as nine of its last 12 games overall went over, as well as seven of its last nine on grass.

Expect a high-scoring affair between these two squads, but don’t be shocked if UCLA squeaks out a close upset.

Prediction: UCLA 34 – Arizona State 30
