Syracue vs West Virginia
@West Virginia

Last game for Syracuse: 81-65 win at Rutgers (ATS win -12.5)
Last Game for West Virginia: 69-50 win at South Florida (ATS win -9)
Last Meeting: Syracuse 74 West Virginia 69 (OT)  (Syracuse has won 9 of last 10)
Line: West Virginia -4

The Big East is great for matching top teams in the regular season.  Right now there are siz squads ranked in the top 16 with two (Villanova and Pitt) undefeated in early conference play.  Both these teams enter this contest with just a single conference loss and whichever one wins will be building on their already strong resume for a number 1 seed.  Syracuse has owned WVU having won 9 of the last 10.  The one loss came in Morgantown which is where this one will be played.

Even though they are ranked fifth in the country the Orange are still a bit of a surprise.  They have come up with some big win and Wesley Johnson has vastly outperformed all expectations – leading the team in both scoring and rebounding.  I love Syracuse balance, they can score inside and out and also have pretty steady guard play with Rautins, Jardine and Triche.  As the season progresses this groups will get tested more and more by the strong backcourts of the Big East.  As long as they continue to perform this team is looking at a a number one seed.  Their toughest reamaining contest, against Villanova is at the Carrier Dome.

West Virginia has one of the best duos in the country with Da’Sean Butler and Devin Ebanks.  Despite the gaudy record I think that both have underperformed this year.  Truth is the Mountaineers still don’t have any really good win and when they faced en elite Purdue team they were crushed.  This teams does not have a lot of depth but they play hard nosed D and work together as a team.  Burly forward Kevin Jones has been better than expected and he will have to keep it up if this team is going to hang with the elite in the conference all season.

Score Prediction:

Syracuse – 70 vs. West Virginia – 66

Pick: The Orange are legit but I think the Mountaineers are just a very good tournament team. Love the upset and taking the points here.  I know they are on the road but if you can get a top five team plus the points then grab them.

Massachusetts vs. Temple
@Temple

Last Game for Massachusetts: 70-63 loss at Richmond (ATS win +12)
Last Game for Temple: 60-45 win at Penn (ATS loss -17.5)
Line: Temple -16
Matchup history: UMass won last matchup 79-75 (ATS win +3.5)

The A-10 conference seems to go up and down like a yo-yo.  One year St. Joes is a number one seed the next they get a single team into the big dance.  Thus far it looks like the Temple Owls are the big dog.  They beat Villanova and only loss to Georgetown by 1.  That is the kind of record most Big East teams would like.  UMass should probably get destroyed, they haven’t won in Philly in their last 5 tries.
The Minutemen are enjoying a disappointing season.  They have been on a downward swing since they lost their coach Travis Ford a couple of seasons ago. UMass is led by their guards, especially Ricky Harris who averages nearly 18ppg.  This team is thin upfront with little height or bulk.  This is part of the explanation for why this team is so poorly ranked in most defensive categories.  Although it is also because they are just not very good.

Temple lost 2 of their first six but then rattled off a streak of 10 of 11 to sit pretty at 14-3.  They are 2-0 thus far in conference play and have their toughest opponents on home court – Xavier and Dayton.  Despite the loss of leading scorer Dionte Christmas they have three players in double figures and big man Lavoy Allen has increased his production into double-double range.  Unlike UMass the Owls play amazing defense.  They are third in the country at only 55.5ppg.  UMass tries to outscore their opponents but this is a poor strategy against the Owls.Sports Betting at the Sportsbook

Score Prediction:

Temple – 60 vs. Massachusetts – 43

Pick: UMass has no chance grabbing the upset againt the Owls in Philly.  I am never a fan of laying double digit points so I think this one is a pass.  Playing the under might be a smart move if you need to get down.

Can’t Ignore
Saturday January 16, 8:00PM
Wisconsin vs Ohio State
@Ohio State

Last game for Wisconsin: 60-50 win at Northwestern (ATS win -3)
Last game for Ohio State: 70-66 win at Purdue (ATS win +9)
Line: Ohio State -4.5
Matchup History: Wisconsin won 65-43 at home earlier this season.  (P.S. Evan Turner did not dress)

Evan Turner led a shocking comeback by the Buckeyes at Purdue earlier in the week.  He is very possibly the best player in the country and any chance Wisconsin has at winning will depend on how well they can neutralize him.  Lucky for the Badgers they make a habit out of frustrating the opposition with their patience and execution.

Wisconsin is a marvel.  There is probably no team in the country that is more committed to its system and if they dictate pace there is no team they can not beat.  They won’t quit but I would feel better about the Badgers if Jon Leuer were suiting up.  He is their best big, second leading scorer and best rebounder.  Ohio State has no real presence in the middle but their perimeter players are very good, better than Wisconsin’s

Evan Turner down the stretch against Purdue was the most dominating performance I have seen in a while.  His teammates got out of his way and collected a victory.  Turner being out may have cost the Buckeyes a few W’s but in the long run it should have helped as the trio of Buford and Lighty picked it up.  Now they know they can get by on days when Turner might be off.  This Ohio State shoots the ball really well at almost 50%.  Even if the Badgers limit possessions it might actually play into the Buckeyes hands because they are so efficient.

Score Prediction:

Ohio State – 66 vs. Wisconsin – 57

Pick: Turner missed the early season blowout and now Leuer will miss this one.  OSU is riding high and will continue to do so on their home court.  Sorry Wiscy, Ohio State is the easy play.
