Volunteers travel to Memorial Gym in Nashville tonight to take on the Commodores in a crucial SEC match-up. Both teams are tied for second in the conference, a game behind #2 Kentucky and both desperately need a win tonight to keep pace with the Wildcats.

The Tennessee Volunteers come into this game with an overall record of 18-4 (6-2 in the SEC). They are ranked 12th in both the AP and Coaches Poll. They have won their last three games including a 61-60 win over Florida, a 59-54 win at LSU, and a 79-53 rout over South Carolina that helped them move up two spots in both polls from the previous week. Against LSU, they were able to weather a late surge by the Tigers on some late game free throws. They lead by 14 points with eight minutes left in the game and actually trailed by one with 17 seconds left to play, but hung on to win. In the win over the Gamecocks, Wayne Chism scored a career high 30 points and Kenny Hall pulled down 11 rebounds. Through 22 games Chism is averaging 13 points per game and seven rebounds. Scotty Hopson is averaging 13.2 points and Tyler Smith is averaging 11.7.

The Vanderbilt Commodores are currently 17-5 (6-2 in the SEC). They are ranked #22 in the AP Poll and #24 in the Coaches Poll, falling a few spots after losing two out of their last three games. Previously they had won 10 straight dating back to mid December. In a tough 72-85 loss to Kentucky, they fell behind by 15 points at the half and were never able to recover. They bounced back with a 75-72 win over Mississippi State, but were blown out three nights later by Georgia 58-72, suffering their worst loss of the year. In this game they led by three at the half, but were outscored 49-32 in the second. Through 22 games, Jermaine Beal is the Commodores leading scorer, averaging 14.4 points per game. A.J. Ogilvy and Jeffery Taylor are each averaging over 13 points per game and Ogilvy is the team’s leading rebounder with 6.2 per game.

In the first meeting between these two teams back on January 27th, Vanderbilt came out of top 85-76 on the road. Led by Beal’s 25 points, the Commodores handed the Volunteers their first home loss of the season. Tonight is Tennessee’s chance to extract some revenge as well as get a leg up in the conference.
