The North Carolina Tar Heels travel to Alexander Memorial Coliseum in Atlanta, GA. to take on the Yellow Jackets in a battle of teams that are currently lost in the middle of the ACC pack, struggling just to keep any thoughts of the postseason afloat.

Defending national champion North Carolina has fallen deep and hard this season after last year’s title run. They are currently 14-11 overall and 3-7 in conference play. In losing seven out of their last nine games they are in real danger of not even making the NCAA Tournament unless they win the conference tournament. Injuries have taken their toll as Ed Davis, Tyler Zeller, and Travis Wear are out of the lineup. With the amount of talent they lost from last year’s championship team along with the players that are injured on this year’s team you can understand how the Tar Heels have fallen on hard times. Pride and tradition can only take you so far, as they have been completely out manned by the better teams they have faced.

Despite all of this, they continue to press on. In their last game they beat North Carolina State 74-61 to snap a four game losing streak. Larry Drew II scored 15 points and Senior F Deon Thompson added 12 more to help them pull away from the Wolfpack. Through 25 games Thompson is averaging 14.2 points and 6.3 rebounds and Junior G-F Will Graves is averaging 9.4 points and five rebounds a game.

Georgia Tech is currently 17-8 overall and 5-6 in conference play. They are coming off of back to back losses to Miami (64-62) and Wake Forest (75-64) and have lost three out of their last four. Their last win was also against N.C. State back on February 6th. Zachery Peacock’s 22 points led the way for the Yellow Jackets in that one. In their first game of the season against the Tar Heels back on January 16th, Iman Shumpert had a career day, scoring 30 points as the Yellow Jackets blew a 20 point lead but hung onto win 73-71. On the season, Junior F Gani Lawal is the team’s leading scorer, averaging 14.2 points per game along with 9.4 rebounds. Freshman F Derrick Favors is second with 11 points per game and 8.1 rebounds.

North Carolina is 1-4 in their last five games on the road while Georgia Tech has only lost once at home this season. I expect the Yellow Jackets to take full advantage of the home court advantage as well as the fact that the Tar Heels are just a mere shell of their former selves.
