There is no recent history between these two opponents.
I must admit I hadn’t seen much of Richmond until the A-10 Championship game but they lived up to expectations in a hard fought loss to Temple. This team is a blue collar squad that does everything pretty well. They take pride in their defense and have the kind of backcourt scoring and leadership that you usually find on teams that do well in the tournament.
Kevin Anderson and David Gonzalvez average more than 32ppg and as long as they continue to play well the Spiders can put a scare into anybody.
They don’t have the dominant big body you would like to challenge the Gaels Omar Samhan but they do have plenty of fouls to make him earn his points. How they decide to play him will be an interesting chess matchup between the coaches.
Saint Mary’s has an impressive record but it is hard to know if they are really good . Before finding the answer against Gonzaga in the WCC Championship game they had lost to them twice in the regular season and their only other win of note was against San Digeo State.
No matter what you think of the Gaels, Omar Samhan is one of the few real brutes in college basketball this year and he will present a matchup problem for the Spiders. The Gaels like to score and are pretty balanced with 5 players in double figures.
This is a classic offense vs. defense game and it should make for a very close contest. Both teams have fought hard to make it this far.
