NCAA Basketball Matchup Tips: Utah vs. San Diego State

The Utah Utes are used to winning, but it just hasn’t been happening that much this season. Utah is just 10-13, and they have lost seven of their last ten games overall. The job won’t get any easier tonight, when they face one of the top teams in the nation in San Diego. The San Diego State Aztecs beat Utah by nine on the road earlier this year, and they look to sweep the season series tonight.
Utah is a team that likes to push the tempo of the game, but the problem is they have trouble scoring. Will Clyburn is a solid scorer who can get his own shot, but outside of Clyburn this team just doesn’t have scorers. Jay Watkins is out with a pelvis injury, and he is one of their key players in the frontcourt. Utah’s defense is allowing 71 points per game this year, and they aren’t good at forcing turnovers either. This is a very inconsistent Utah team.
San Diego State has what is probably the best frontcourt in the entire nation. Kawhi Leonard, Billy White, and Malcolm Thomas are an absolutely tremendous trio of forwards. I fully expect them to take advantage of Watkins being out of the lineup for the Utes. The Aztecs have a couple key players injured. Tim Shelton and Chase Tapley are unlikely to play tonight, but both of their injuries don’t appear too serious. San Diego State plays terrific defense, and they are allowing just 58.8 points per game. On offense, they rank 17th in the nation in field goal percentage. This is a very good basketball team.
The Pick:
San Diego State hasn’t been blowing teams out of late, but they have been clamping down on the defensive end. Utah struggles with their shooting in a normal game, and I think San Diego State’s defense will give them lots of trouble. I like the under here.
