The special-edition BracketBusters event, designed to weed out the pretenders from the contenders in the mid-major conferences, concludes its Saturday run (it has a few games on Sunday) with a clash between the leaders of the Big Sky and Big West Conferences.
Montana leads the Big Sky with an 11-3 mark, while Long Beach State heads the Big West at 11-2 in the league. Montana has won nine of its last 11 while Long Beach has claimed 11 of its last 13 contests. Both of these teams wobbled a bit a few weeks ago but have since steadied themselves and retaken control of their respective league races, although Montana’s being pushed to a greater extent in the Big Sky.
What’s a potential point of differentiation between the two clubs?
Most of Montana’s roster is part of the team that reached the NCAA Tournament last year, while Long Beach – which last made the NCAAs in 2007 – doesn’t have a single player with March Madness experience.
Grizzlies sophomore guard Will Cherry averages 15 points, 4.1 assists, 3.4 rebounds and 2.8 steals per game but the bigger problem – literally and figuratively – will be center Brian Qvale, who averages 14.8 points, 8.8 rebounds and 3.2 blocks per game. Long Beach State doesn’t really have anyone to match up with his body in the front court and combined with the edge in experience between the teams, that could be a big difference.
It’s important to have a club that knows what it takes to make the big show in college basketball. Expect Montana to possess a little more grit and savvy in late-game possessions. Take the Grizzlies on the road in Long Beach, California.
