@Indiana State
Last Game for Northern Iowa: 60-51 loss at Wichita State (ATS loss +2)
Last Game for Indiana State: 99-92 loss at Southeast Missouri State (ATS win +9)

Line: Northern Iowa -6.5
Matchup history: UNI won 62-40 at home just over a week ago.

Love using the MMR to look at some teams that aren’t often discussed.  The Mizzou Valley conference is among the most competitive in the country and teams like Southern Illinois and Bradley sometimes destroy brackets come March.  However, maybe no team has been as consistent as UNI, who hasn’t really had a down year lately and has made the Tourney 4 out of the last 6 years.  They are looking to regain their conference swagger on the road against the Indiana State Sycamore of Larry Bird fame.

The Panthers were primed to run the table in the Valley.  They were ranked 16th going into Wichita to play the Shockers, the leagues second best team, and came away with their first and likely only conference loss.  The Panthers have run up a gaudy record on the strength of their frontcourt.  Sports Betting at the Sportsbook Pre-season conference POY candidate Adam Koch is joined upfront by Jordan Eglseder.  Eglseder is a beast at 7’0 280 and his numbers are improved to the point that he might be POY.  They have so much bulk upfront that it makes it the Panthers tough to tangle with.  Their guards are nothing special but they know not to hold on to the ball too much and don’t turn it over.

The Sycamores are fairly unexciting and this contest against UNI will probably the closest anyone looks at this team all season.  Bracketologists will be keen to see how the Panthers respond to the loss.  Indiana State has been solid at home (6-2) but has not shown much in conference play other than that they know how to lose in overtime (twice already).  This is a fundamentally sound team but it doesn’t have very explosive athletes.  It is too bad because one area where they really excel is at the foul line (10th in the nation at 76%).

They are going to have a tough time holding back the UNI bigs, although in the first meeting they did not have to commit many fouls and held Koch and Eglseder to a combined 17 points.  They will need to do the same to have a chance in this one.

Score Prediction:

Northern Iowa – 59
Indiana State – 51

Good insight into two teams you do not hear too much about, but have a quality program none the less. Games like this are interesting to watch as one of these teams may end up being a bracket buster or even a first round surprise in the tournament.
