The Huskies burst out of the gate pulling off a few upsets that launched them to near the top of the national rankings.  Not to diminish the team but most thought their play was surprising and now that they have opened Big East play it looks like they are correct.  They are 1-2 so far in the Big East and this game against Texas is a rare out of conference resume building opportunity so late in the season.  UConn is led by the nation’s leading scorer point guard Kemba Walker.  Walker has been brilliant thus far and when he gets a smidge of help from his teammates this team is hard to stop.  But he can’t always do it all by himself and will eventually wear down if coach Jim Calhoun isn’t careful.  This is a very tough matchup for the Huskies because the Longhorns are loaded with players that can guard and attack Walker all game long.  If he is off his game on the road against elite competition there is no way the Huskies have a chance.

Texas has been better than I expected this season.  I thought they would struggle without much of an interior presence but they are loaded on the perimeter and the college game is for the guards after all.  Jordan Hamilton has really come on as a sophomore and is averaging almost 20ppg.  He is shooting a very good 42% from three point range, a figure matched by freshman Cory Joseph.  A Canadian by way of Findlay Prep, Joseph has stepped in at the point and is leading the team in minutes played.  He and fellow frosh Tristan Thompson, who is also from Canada, are the best frosh duo not playing in Kentucky.  Thompson may not be an overpowering player but he is very athletic and is leading the team in rebounds.  He might have a hard time against the timber that Connecticut has up front.  This game has some very interesting matchup possibilities.

Betting Trends:
Huskies are 5-0 ATS in their last 5 non-conference games.
Huskies are 6-1 ATS in their last 7 games vs. a team with a winning % above .600.
Longhorns are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games following a ATS win.
Longhorns are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games vs. a team with a winning S.U. record.
Longhorns are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 home games.

UConn has enough athletes to run with the Horns and size to bother them, but perhaps outside of Walker not enough skill.  Unless they can really slow this down they are not going to be able to pull off the upset.  Not a great amount of value here but I would lean to Texas.

Score prediction:  Texas 77 – Connecticut 70
