The #13 seed Murray Sate Racers face the #5 seed Butler Bulldogs in the second round of the West regional with tip-off slated for 3:20 Saturday, March 20th.
Murray State (31-4) is not your typical 13 seed as any Division 1 team that wins 30 games in a season no matter what conference they are from must be doing something right.
They came into this tournament having won 21 of their last 22 games including a 62-51 win over Morehead State in the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament. They proved this point with a huge upset in the first round with a 66-65 thrilling victory over the #4 seed Vanderbilt.
In a game that was close the whole way, it took a dramatic 15’ jumper by senior F Danero Thomas as time expired to pull out the win.
Danero ended the game with 11 points, but junior G Isacc Miles was the Racers top scorer with 17.
Junior G B.J. Jenkins added 14 points and 5 assists in the winning effort. One thing about Murray State is offensively they are a very balanced team, as on the season they have five players that averaged double digit points.
Butler (29-4) was like a hot knife through butter in the Horizon Conference this season as they went a perfect 18-0 in conference play and waltzed through the conference tournament, beating Wright State in the final 70-45.
The #8 ranked team in the nation also has some early season quality wins (Ohio State 74-66 and Xavier 69-68) on their resume so it is no surprise that they easily handled the 12th seeded UTEP Minors 77-59 in the first round.
The Bulldogs actually trailed in this game by six at the half, but they completely dismantled the Minors in the second half, outscoring them 50-26. 
Led by sophomore G Shelvin Mack’s career best seven three pointers, they pulled away early in the second half and never looked back. Mack ended the game with a career high 25 points. Sophomore G-F Gordon Hayward scored 13 points and junior F Matt Howard added 11.
You have got to love Murray State knocking Vanderbilt out of the dance as this is what this tournament is all about.
Unfortunately they will not be able to sneak up on a solid Butler team that is playing at a very high level and will be ready for whatever the Racers throw at them.
