The #12 seed Cornell Big Red face the #1 seed Kentucky Wildcats in the Sweet Sixteen round of the East regional with tip-off slated for 9:55 P.M. Thursday, March 25th.

The Ivy League is the only conference that gets an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament without having a conference tournament play in so by Cornell (29-4) winning the league with a 13-1 regular season record in conference play, they punched their ticket to the dance. Many experts thought they could be a potentially dangerous #12 seed and in the first two rounds they have more than lived up to these lofty expectations. In the first round against #5 seed Temple they hit eight of their first 10 shots and jumped out to a lead that they never relinquished on their way to a dominating 78-65 win.

In the second round against #4 seed Wisconsin, they copied the same blueprint by building a 43-31 lead at the half and coasted to a 87-69 win and a second straight impressive upset of a higher seed. They are led by a trio of seniors; F Ryan Wittman, who is averaging 17.5 points per game, C Jeff Foote, who is averaging 12.3 points and 8.2 rebounds, and G Louis Dale, who is averaging 11.9 points per game.

With Kansas making an unexpected exit from the tournament in the second round, Kentucky (34-2) assumes the role as the odds-on-favorite at 2-1 to win the National Title.

The SEC East regular season champion and SEC Tournament champion Wildcats did not miss a beat in the first two rounds of this tournament. In their first game they rolled over #16 seed East Tennessee State 100-71 and in their second game they hammered #9 seed Wake Forest 90-60.

Led by a pair of freshman phenomenon’s John Wall and DeMarcus Cousins this team is loaded with talent and will be favored against anyone they face. In the win over the Buccaneers, another freshman; Eric Bledsoe scored a game high 29 points. In the win over the Demon Deacons, sophomore G Darius Miller scored a career high 20 points. With four players averaging in double figures, they can beat you in so many ways.

Cornell has gotten this far because of the talent and experience in their lineup. They play very consistent ball and do not make many mistakes. Kentucky has had a free ride so far as the youth of this team has yet to be tested.

Look for the Big Red to push these youngsters to the limit, coming up just a bit short on pulling off the second biggest upset in this tournament. Cornell +9
