Butler vs. Orange – 7:00 P.M. Thursday, March 25th – WEST REGION – SWEET 16 AT SALT LAKE CITY
Odds: Butler +7 (-110)
Syracuse -7 (-110)
Over/Under: 137.5

The #5 seed Butler Bulldogs face the #1 seed Syracuse Orange in the Sweet Sixteen round of the West regional with tip-off slated for 7:00 P.M. Thursday, March 25th.

Butler (30-4) cruised through the Horizon Conference this season as they went a perfect 18-0 in conference play and won the conference tournament by beating Wright State in the final 70-45. The #8 ranked team in the nation also had some early season quality wins over Ohio State 74-66 and Xavier 69-68 so it was no real surprise that they easily beat the 12th seeded UTEP Minors 77-59 in the first round.

Against the #13 seed upstart Murray State Racers, who were coming off an upset of #4 seed Vanderbilt in the first round, it was a different story. Sophomore G Ronald Nored’s three pointer with 25.4 seconds left put the Bulldogs up for good as they escaped with a 56-54 win and a trip to the Sweet 16. Nored led his team with 15 points and sophomore G-F Gordon Hayward added 12 in the winning effort.

Butler extended their winning streak to 22 games, which is currently the longest in the nation.

Syracuse (30-4) entered this tournament with one of their best defensive players; Arinze Onuaku sidelined with a quad injury he sustained in their 91-84 loss to Georgetown in the Big East Conference Tournament quarterfinals. Through the first two rounds of this tournament he has not been missed as the Orange rolled over #16 seed Vermont 79-56 in the first round and #8 seed Gonzaga 87-65 in the second round.

Against the Zags, Big East “Player of the Year” junior F Wes Johnson scored 31 points and pulled down 14 rebounds to more than fill the void created by Onuaku’s absence from the lineup. Senior G Andy Rautins added 24 points and freshman G Brandon Triche scored 13 for the Orange. Another key statistic were the dozen three pointers that Syracuse drained to help bury the Bulldogs.

With Onuaku most likely a game time decision, they will need another total team effort to bury these Bulldogs.

Any questions about how Syracuse would respond after losing their last two games and one of their starting five have been answered by their performance in the first two rounds.

Betting Trends:

Butler is 5-0 SU in its last 5 games
The total has gone UNDER in 5 of Butler’s last 7 games
Syracuse is 6-2 ATS in its last 8 games
Syracuse is 17-3 SU in its last 20 games
BUTLER is 4-12 ATS (-9.2 Units) when the total is 130 to 139.5 this season
SYRACUSE is 21-9 ATS (+11.1 Units) in all games this season
SYRACUSE is 17-9 ATS (+7.1 Units) as a favorite this season
SYRACUSE is 11-3 ATS (+7.7 Units) in all neutral court games over the last 2 seasons
SYRACUSE is 9-2 ATS (+6.8 Units) in non-conference games this season
SYRACUSE is 13-3 ATS (+9.7 Units) in all tournament games over the last 2 seasons
BUTLER is 87-57 ATS (+24.3 Units) in non-conference games since 1997
BUTLER is 117-86 ATS (+22.4 Units) after allowing 60 points or less since 1997
SYRACUSE is 50-72 ATS (-29.2 Units) versus good defensive teams – allowing < =64 points/game since 1997

Free Bulldogs vs. Orange Free Tournament Pick: Butler should be able to keep this one fairly close for awhile, but I see the Orange pulling away late in the second half. Syracuse – 7
