VCU Rams vs. Purdue Boilermakers Preview
3rd seed Purdue had no problem in their second round game and can 11th seed VCU pull off another Big Dance shocker to advance to the Sweet 16. NCAAB lines have Purdue as 9-point favorites in this game with a total of 134.5.
In their first NCAA tournament games Purdue killed St. Peter’s 65-43 and VCU upset Georgetown 74-56.
Both teams covered the spread in their last games and this season Purdue was a much better betting team going 19-11 ATS while VCU only went 15-20 ATS.
VCU shot slightly better than Georgetown in their win over them and even though the Hoyas had 10 more rebounds the difference in the game was behind the 3-pt arc. The Rams hit on 12 of their long bombs while they held Georgetown to only 5/26 from deep. Rams’ Reserve G Brandon Rozzell scored 26 points and hit 6-10 of his long balls and the Rams will have to shoot the rock well from deep again to pull off another upset since they do not feature much inside offense.
Purdue had an easy time in their win over St. Peter’s holding them to under 30% shooting and the 2 big guns for the Boilermakers of F/C JaJuan Johnson and G E’Twaun Moore combine to score 35 points. Johnson will be the main guy that the Rams have to key on, as in the St. Peter’s game he also had 16 boards. Rebounds will be a HUGE issue for VCU, as they only rank 301st in the nation in boards per game.
If the Rams do not shoot well from deep this game may get ugly.
VCU beat a Georgetown team that does not feature much of an inside game, but that will change this Sunday night. They will have no answer for Johnson, as he will have another huge game, especially on the glass. Purdue will creep up on defense and not give the Rams open looks from deep and since VCU will not shoot lights out from beyond the 3-pt arc again the Boilermakers will win this game in a blowout and cover the 9-point spread.
