The No. 5 Pittsburgh Panthers play at the No. 19 Georgetown Hoyas Wednesday in a Big East battle in our nation’s capital.

Georgetown is in 12th place in the conference, while Pittsburgh is in first.

Pitt began the season with a  perfect 10-record before losing to Tennessee, then rebounded nicely to win five straight including wins against No. 9 Connecticut, Marquette and at Providence. They have a record of 15-1 including 3-0 in the conference.

Meanwhile, the Hoyas are a shocking 1-3 in the Big East coming into Wednesday’s contest and could be in trouble early after a paltry string of outings scoring just 55 points at No. 11 Notre Dame, 58 at St. John’s and 59 points in their last game at home against West Virginia. Way off from the same squad that had put up over 80 points in six of their previous games before that stretch, including 111 against Missouri. G’Town’s only conference win came against 6-9 DePaul.

The Hoyas usually dominate their home court, and the loss against WVU puts that record at 7-1.

The Mountaineers held the nation’s second-best shooting team to just 50 percent and outrebound then 29-20 while forcing five more turnovers. Jason Clark did his best to keep the Hoyas in it with 16 points in 31 minutes while Chris Wright added three steals.

As for the Panthers, they are shooting at a clip of 49.3 percent while leading the nation in assists with 20.4 a game, having recorded more assists than their opponents in their past 12 games.

The Panthers’ leading scorer Ashton Gibbs (16.4PPG) has led the team in scoring in eight of 16 games this season including 19 points on 54 percent shooting in 33 minutes, with 15 3-pointers in the team’s 89-81 conference win over Marquette its last time out.

On paper Pitt are better in four categories, but if their Big East pattern continues on defense, the Hoyas could score more than 80 once again. The Panthers has given up more and more through their first three conference games and have surrendered 63.6 points compared to the Hoyas 66.6 per game. Georgetown does lead in steals, a key defensive stat, as well as in blocked shots.

The Hoyas are listed as the favorite with a -2 spread, making for a potentially close game. Last year, G’Town won 74-66. In four seasons, the Hoyas has a record of 3-4 against Pittsburgh.

How will Georgetown respond to their first home loss this season? I’m not sure. However, my gut tells me the battle for the Big East is going to go through Pittsburgh and I’m calling the upset in  this one.
