Blue Devils vs Cavaliers Handicapping

The Blue Devils have made it to the ACC Championship Game but they have not been overly impressive. They barely got by Clemson in the quarterfinals and also failed to cover in the semis against N.C. State. [ad-4468020]

Duke

The good thing is that they beat Virginia in the regular season and when it comes to star power this team certainly has it. When they play at their best they can compete with any team in the nation and have proven it.

Through two games in the ACC Tournament Jabari Parker has not been at his best but down the stretch he was phenomenal with double-doubles in 7 of his last 8 games. When Duke is at its best Parker plays an aggressive physical game around the hoop.

He and Rodney Hood are as dangerous a forward duo as any in the country. Scoring against the Cavaliers is difficult and they will need to play well for Duke to come out on top.

Duke appears to be ramping up for a March run.

They had a bit of a hiccup against Wake Forest to start the month but then they kncocked off UNC and followed that with their ACC tourney wins.

They have not been covering but with such a small spread in this one that is kind of immaterial Sunday.

Virginia

The Cavaliers continue to surprise me. They have aways been an elite defensive team under coach Tony Bennett but their success has been surprising given that Joe Harris has been a shell of what he showed last season, when we has all ACC.

Now is the time of year they need at least one player to step up and lead offensively.

The question is whether Harris or somebody else is ready to do it.

With Harris’ decline this season Malcolm Brogdon has stepped forward. He leads the team in scoring and assists and is second in rebounding so it is clear the strong guard from Georgia has become the Cavs most important player.

He had a big game against Duke in their loss to them early in the season with 17 points and 5 boards.

However, he has zero assists so the Blue Devils limited his all around play and it worked.

Virginia has had a great season. The question at this point is whether they can dig deep and keep adding to their regular season hardware. It may not be fair but I think these are the kind of situations where stars shine and the Cavs are lacking in that departments.

It wouldn’t surprise is they have an early exit next week too.
