Head Coach: Gregg Popovich
Conference: West
2014-15 Record: 55-27
Odds To Win 2016 NBA Championship: 3/1

As if being a perennial powerhouse weren’t already enough, this group found a new way to keep its championship window wide open. The Spurs no longer have to rely on internal growth and sustained stardom, as it finally managed to penetrate the free-agent market by acquiring this summer’s marquee target, LaMarcus Aldridge, and a valuable veteran at a ridiculously cheap cost in David West.

Team Strengths

The obvious strength with this roster is experience. The core of Tim Duncan, Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili has done incredible work through the years, and now adding a player with conference finals experience in West — not to mention the ever-improving Defensive Player of the Year and former Finals MVP Kawhi Leonard — should frighten playoff competition at every stage of the postseason.

Depth is also going to benefit this team throughout the year. Although the Spurs did have to sacrifice a few pieces of their deep roster this summer to make space for the newcomers, Gregg Popovich won’t be afraid to give the reserves the run they need to prepare for an inevitable postseason appearance .

Team Weaknesses

If you’re going to find a weakness in San Antonio’s game after this summer, you’ll have to nitpick. Doing just that, interior defense has the potential to be inconsistent in 2015-16.

In order to clear space for Aldridge, the Spurs had to ship off Tiago Splitter to the Atlanta Hawks. Tim Dunan will now man the starting center spot, and while he’s been more than capable of protecting the rim in the past, he’ll be 40 years old by the time San Antonio is set to make a deep playoff run.

Why They Can Win 2016 NBA Championship

Steve Kerr, head coach of the NBA champion Golden State Warriors, might have said it best when it comes to San Antonio’s title chances:

“You look at what San Antonio did getting Aldridge,”Kerr said. “I mean if they don’t win the whole thing next year it’s clearly the coach’s fault.

I mean if Pop can’t win the whole thing with that roster then he has no business coaching in this league.”

That comment may have been made in good fun, but there’s some validity to the sentiment that the Spurs will be the favorites in the eyes of many next season.

Expect the ceiling for this team to undeniably be a championship, and the basement to be an appearance in the Western Conference Finals. The West is brutal — and will continue to be brutal next season — but no team is better prepared to compete at the highest level.

The only thing that can keep this team out for the WCF is health. But even if the team deals with injuries throughout the year, there are plenty of pieces that will be ready to step up and make up the difference.
