The Detroit Pistons haven’t been very good this year, but they have beaten some high quality teams. The Pistons actually bested the Celtics by twelve late last month, but Kevin Garnett was limited in that game. Garnett was solid in his return on Monday against the Magic, and the Celtics will be plenty motivated to face this Eastern Conference rival. Boston has won three straight and they’ll be looking to make it four in a row on their home floor Wednesday night.
The Pistons are a team that still has plenty of talent, but they have been wildly inconsistent this year. After losing five out of six games, they have now won three straight. Detroit has been awful on the road this year, where they are 4-17. The Pistons have five guys averaging 12 points per game or more, so on any given night it could be a different player who steps up as their leading scorer. Rodney Stuckey does a nice job penetrating the lane, but he needs to improve his outside shot.
Tayshaun Prince is a solid all-around player, and he is having a nice season for the Pistons. Probably the most encouraging sign of late for Detroit has been the emergence of Greg Monroe. Monroe struggled through the early part of the season, but he has really stepped up of late. Monroe has scored in double figures now in seven straight games, and he has averaged 10 rebounds per game during that period as well.
The Celtics are a veteran team that is trying to prepare for the playoffs. Make no mistake about it, Boston is all about trying to get back to the NBA Finals and finish the deal this year. The Celtics are currently the number one seed in the East, although the Heat are right in the thick of the race for the top seed as well. Boston has shot the ball extremely well this year, which has helped them be extremely successful. The Celtics offense is patient and they find the open man. Boston is shooting 50.5% thus far on the year.
Paul Pierce is shooting 51% from the floor, which is the highest percentage he has shot in his career. Rajon Rondo continues to develop at the point guard position, and he does a brilliant job running the offense. Boston is still playing their terrific defense as well. Doc Rivers has this team giving their all on the defensive end on a consistent basis, and getting Garnett back will solidify this defense in a big way. The Celtics have gotten some quality production out of Shaq as well, which has been very helpful to their cause. This team will be a tough out in the playoffs this year.
