Each side comes in off a loss and will be hoping that Thursday’s game can jump start an extended winning streak.

Given the landscape of the NBA’s Atlantic Division, at the start of the season it would have been a mild surprise to see the Knicks and Nets meet on Thursday with 13 losses combined, but to come in with 13 losses apiece would have been a definite shock. The teams have a combined record of 8-26, good for a winning percentage of .235. Brooklyn’s most recent loss in a 111-87 beat down at the hands of Denver.

The Nets have dealt with a plethora of injuries this season, and in the game against the Nuggets they had to do without the services of forward Paul Pierce. Without Pierce or point guard Deron Williams in the lineup, the team’s offense struggled mightily against a soft Denver defense.

The team could muster only 87 points on 40 percent shooting from the field, knocking down only 2 of 16 threes. Guard Joe Johnson stepped up to lead the offense with 22 points, but he needed to step up his distribution game and didn’t, dishing out only one assist. Guard Alan Anderson led the team with three assists, while starting point guard Tyshawn Taylor had only two in 34 minutes. Future Hall of Famer Kevin Garnett continued an abysmal season, scoring only two points in 17 minutes.

New York’s last loss came at the hands of New Orleans, as the team fell 103-99.

The worst part of New York’s struggles is that they’ve gotten solid play out of star Carmelo Anthony, yet still haven’t been able to win. The absence of center Tyson Chandler has absolutely crippled the team at the defensive end, and that was evident in a 103-point, 49.4 percent shooting night from New Orleans. That came on a night where the team’s two bigs actually played decently at the defensive end, as Andrea Bargnani and Kenyon Martin combined for nine blocks and five steals.

Anthony led the team in scoring with 23 points on 9 of 21 shooting, adding a team-high 10 rebounds. Guard Tim Hardaway Jr. had a good game off the bench, scoring 21 points on 6 of 10 shooting, including 5 of 8 shooting from beyond the arc.

This feels like the kind of game it might be better to stay away from given the poor play of both sides, but if pressured to make a play, it would be hard to overlook Brooklyn’s woeful offensive performance in their last game.

The play: New York +1
