It’s a talent league, today’s NBA is.

Superstar players are rewarded with marginal calls, and traveling is called so infrequently that when it is called, it gets everyone’s attention. To compete for a title, a team needs a couple of top-20 players to go along with half-decent talent to fill out the rotation. And sometimes even that’s not enough (see Knicks, New York).

Charlotte and New Jersey, who play tonight in Newark only to fulfill NBA requirements, occupy the lowest reaches of the NBA. There is so little talent that a new combined team combining the top 7 or 8 players from each roster might still not make the playoffs. It’s possible that 7 other teams will finish with as many victories as both the Bobcats and Nets combined.

It’s so bad in Charlotte that one local writer is speculating that it might not be bad for the team if there is a labor lockout next season – it would give Charlotte two drafts to stock up and to become competitive in an Eastern Conference that has more than its share of stars. The Bobcats’ best player is Stephen Jackson, who just turned 33 and is starting to accumulate some injuries (he’s 50/50 for tonight’s game). Online Sports Betting at Sportsbook

The Nets figured they had finally turned a corner with the Deron Williams trade, but New Jersey has actually been a worse team with Williams calling signals – and DW has not shown any indication that he is the least bit interested in signing a long-term contract to stay with the Nets. Williams no doubt looks at a talent-challenged Nets roster and wonders if he will be just hitting his head against the wall if he re-signs.

NBA Trends:

Under is 10-2 in CHAR last 12 road games.
Under is 6-2 in CHAR last 8 Mon. games.
CHAR are 5-13-2 ATS in their last 20 Mon. games.
Over is 8-2 in NJ last 10 Mon. games.

BEST BET: With two teams with absolutely nothing to play for going 48 minutes, defense would appear to be the first casualty as padding stats becomes Job One.

The Nets have gone under their last two games, no doubt due to the absence of Williams, who is out for the year due to a wrist injury. Charlotte, though, has been an over team of late (3 straight).

Over is the play.
