ATS Matchup Insight | CappersPicks Insider Preview

The Pacers really stepped out of our usual expectations for them by playing a strong offensive game in Game 1, coming away with a win despite a subpar performance by their standards at the defensive end. The Pacers shot 51.5 percent from the field and 42.1 percent from beyond the arc in the contest, getting a little help from the officials with 37 trips to the charity stripe.

The Pacers got a very effective performance from their starting five, with that unit racking up a combined 94 points. The team’s bench scored only 13 points, with 11 of those coming from C.J. Watson. Paul George led the team in scoring with 24 points on 7-of-13 shooting, adding seven assists, four rebounds, and a steal.

David West was a force inside, scoring 19 points, seven rebounds, and three assists, and really making LeBron James work at both ends of the court. Fellow big man Roy Hibbert had a strong game as well, scoring 19 points, and adding nine rebounds, three assists, and a block.

LeBron had 25 points for the Heat, adding 10 rebounds, five assists, and three steals. Dwyane Wade led the team in scoring with 27 points on 12-of-18 shooting, adding four assists and a rebound, while Chris Bosh had just nine points, four assists, and one rebound.

The Pacers were able to utilize a strong inside-outside game at the offensive end, and while they were able to have plenty of success with it in Game 1, don’t be surprised if the Heat make some serious adjustments to slow them down in Game 2.

The Heat have been one of the NBA’s top defensive teams during the Big Three era, and it’s hard to imagine them having a second consecutive poor performance at that end of the court again in this one. Few teams have been able to make mid-series adjustments like Erik Spoelstra’s crew. They’ve been notoriously calm when things go South, and that’s what has helped bring them so much success.

Don’t be surprised to see the Heat get away from the small lineup that worked so well in the semifinal round against the Nets, as the Pacers caused some real damage in the paint in Game 1, and Spoelstra surely took note of that. The Heat are in a prime bounce-back spot here, and come in at a favorable number.

The Pacers are 3-15 ATS in their last 18 contests following a game in which they scored 100 or more points, and they are 5-14 ATS in their last 19 home games.

The play: Miami -2
