Phoenix Suns

The Phoenix Suns are the epitome of an offense-oriented basketball team. Not only do they have a tendency to play small ball, but they’re No. 4 in points scored per game (106.6) and No. 28 in points allowed per game (104.9).

In the last outing against Portland (Jan. 21), Phoenix took home a win in a high-scoring contest. The Suns won 118-113, but they’re now going up against a Trail Blazers squad that has its big man back: Robin Lopez.

Against Portland, the goal will be to defend the three-point line. The Blazers are sixth in the NBA in terms of three-point percentage and third in terms of three-pointers made each night, while the Suns are just 21st in terms of three-point percentage allowed.

Portland Trail Blazers

Unlike the Suns, Portland is actually quite good at defending the three-point line.

The team from the Northwest Division allows opponents to shoot just 31.4 percent from downtown, which is the best number in the Association.

Although defending the three-point line is always a priority for the Blazers, they need to focus on defending the pick and roll. In particular, the team needs Damian Lillard to fight through screens at a more efficient rate.

Speaking of Lillard, the Blazers need the point guard to step it up on the offensive end as well.

He’s been in a slump, and if his shooting game is off, Portland will be in trouble.

NBA Handicapping Trends:

  • Over is 4-1-1 in Portland’s last 6 games
  • Portland is 0-6 ATS in its last 6 games after allowing 100 points or more in its previous game
  • Portland is 0-4 ATS in its last 4 games overall
  • Portland is 0-5 ATS in its last 5 home games
  • Phoenix is 6-2 in its last 8 games following a SU loss
  • Phoenix  is 4-1 ATS in its last 5 games on 2 days rest

4* NBA Prediction: Phoenix +4.5

Simply put: Phoenix has had Portland’s number of the past couple of seasons. If Portland manages to pull off a win straight up on national television, it will be in dramatic fashion.
