2010 Tums Fast Relief 500 Predictions – Betting Preview + Picks + Odds

Preview:  It’s hard to imagine a surprise winner for this Sunday’s race, since the past eight Martinsville races dating back to October of 2006 have been won by just two drivers:  Jimmie Johnson and Denny Hamlin.  Johnson won five of those races, while Hamlin won three, though Johnson has six wins here in total.

Race: Tums Fast Relief 500 – Martinsville Speedway
Date: Sunday, October 24, 2010
Time: 1:13 PM EST (scheduled Green Flag)
TV: 1:00 PM EST on ESPN

Jeff Gordon leads all active drivers in Martinsville wins with seven, but his last was in 2005.  Mark Martin and Tony Stewart have two wins a piece, while Jeff Burton and Kurt Busch each have one.  Hamlin served notice in qualifying Friday, putting the No. 11 car on the pole, while Johnson starts back in 19th.

Safe Bets:

1. Jimmie Johnson (9/5): As noted above, Johnson has won five of the last eight Martinsville races (both spring and fall dates), including three straight in ’06-’07.  He has the best average finish at 5.4 and has only finished outside the top-10 once in 17 Martinsville starts.  Johnson finished second here last fall after leading 164 laps.

2. Denny Hamlin (5/2): Jimmie Johnson may have led 164 laps here last fall, but Hamlin led 206 and took the checkered flag.  His average finish is second to Johnson’s at 6.6 and, like Johnson, he’s only finished outside the top-10 once in his Cup career here.  Hamlin has scored the most points at Martinsville over the last five races including bonus points, even more than Johnson.

Dark Horse:

1. Greg Biffle (30/1): Although he’s only had two top-10 finishes at Martinsville in his Cup career, one of those was this past spring when he finished 10th.  The Biff was impressive in practice Friday, running fourth on the speed chart and tenth in the category of ‘fastest 10-lap average speed.’  He followed that up in qualifying by putting the No. 16 car on the inside of row 2.

Summary:  With only 41 points separating Johnson in first from Hamlin in second in the championship points, the two at battling not only for the win at Martinsville, but for the impact this race will have on their title hopes as well.
