Seattle Mariners (16-19)
Michael Pineda (4-2, 2.58)

The Seattle Mariners have been predictably bad this season but rookie hurler Michael Pineda has been a rare bright spot. The big righty out of the Dominican Republic is really living up to his top prospect billing so far in 2011; he was named the American League Rookie of the Month for April. Pineda has been truly dominant, striking out 39 hitters in 38.1 innings while holding opponents to a .210 average.

It’s naturally tough for bettors to predict Pineda’s performance this early in the season, especially when he hasn’t faced Baltimore before. But it is worth noting that Pineda tends to be wilder on the road (eight walks in 18 innings) and that the offense supporting him ranks in the bottom three in baseball for batting average, homers and OPS.

Baltimore Orioles (14-19)
Jake Arrieta (4-1, 4.35)

Like the Mariners, the Orioles are a struggling team trying to stay positive by looking to their promising young pitchers. Jake Arrieta is one of them; the sophomore has allowed more than three runs in a start just once in seven outings this season. He’s 2-1 at home but with a 5.06 ERA, three homers allowed and 10 walks in just 21.1 innings. Bet on MLB at BetOnline

The Orioles have to be very disappointed with their offense so far. They’re seventh in baseball in homers but are batting just .232 as a team. That’s unexpected from a veteran lineup that was supposed to be above average with Brian Roberts, Nick Markakis, Derek Lee, Vlad Guerrero, Adam Jones, Mark Reynolds and Matt Wieters on board.

MLB Trends:

SEA are 6-2 in their last 8 games following a loss.
Under is 23-11-3 in SEA last 37 Tue. games.
BAL are 6-2 in their last 8 Tue. games.
Over is 7-3-2 in Arrietas last 12 home starts.

The pick:

While Arrieta has been solid, he hasn’t been Pineda. The Seattle youngster has been one of the American League’s most dominant pitchers this season. He’s facing an Orioles lineup that has been held to three runs or less in five straight games and has lost four straight. Seattle seems like the right play – though I’d expect Arrieta to keep the score close considering out weak the M’s offense is.

Mariners vs Orioles prediction: Mariners 3, Orioles 2
