Los Angeles Dodgers (26-31)
Hiroki Kuroda (5-5, 3.50)
2011 has been a fairly forgettable season for the L.A. Dodgers but they’ve shown signs of life recently, winning four of six. They remain an offensively challenged team but Matt Kemp is having an MVP-caliber season, James Loney is heating up and they’ve gotten better-than-expected contributions from Jamey Carroll and Casey Blake.
How do they feel about sending Hiroki Kuroda to the hill at Great American Ballpark on Friday? He’s 3-0 with a 2.41 ERA against Cincinnati in his career. Then again, He’s been rocked for 19 hits and nine earned runs in 11 innings over his last two starts.
Cincinnati Reds (29-28)
Bronson Arroyo (3-5, 5.74)
Just as they did last year, the Cincinnati Reds are wowing us with their brawn. Jay Bruce has emerged as the National League’s premier power hitter, leading the senior circuit in homers and RBI. He has nine bombs in his last 14 games. And, of course, Joey Votto has been his usual stellar self at the dish, batting .338.
But the Reds are stuck in neutral thanks to their putrid pitching. Their 4.35 team ERA is 25th-best in baseball. It seems every hurler who helped Cincy win a title last year is underachieving this year. Bronson Arroyo has been a Muffin Man, serving up two homers in three straight starts (and allowing five-plus runs in each of those outings).
MLB Trends:
Over is 7-2 in Kurodas last 9 Fri. starts.
Over is 6-2-1 in Kurodas last 9 starts on grass.
Over is 6-2-1 in Kurodas last 9 starts overall.
Over is 6-1-1 in CIN last 8 games following a win.
Over is 11-3-3 in CIN last 17 home games.
CIN are 3-9 in their last 12 Fri. games.
LA are 35-16 in the last 51 meetings.
The pick:
The Reds have the far superior lineup but Kuroda, despite his recent struggles, has never lost to them and is usually good at keeping the ball in the park. Arroyo is 1-4 at home this year with nine homers allowed in 37.1 innings. Kemp is a .353 hitter with multiple homers off Arroyo in his career. I think L.A. can pull the road upset.
Dodgers vs Reds prediction: Dodgers 6, Reds 4
