Milwaukee Brewers (13-15 through May 2)
Zack Greinke (no record)

The Milwaukee Brewers have kinda, sorta kept their heads above water in the National League Central through the first month and that was probably all they feel they needed to do until Wednesday – when their new ace finally makes his season debut.

Zack Greinke is recovered from his rib injury and ready to make his first start as a National Leaguer. Odds are, he’ll be a hit on the Senior Circuit. However, he should be on an innings limit to start and there’s no telling how rusty he’ll be. He’ll have to hope the Brewer bats step up to help him. Ryan Braun and Prince Fielder are almost always up to that task. The big sluggers are both batting well over .300 and have combined for 16 homers and 49 RBI over the first 28 games of the season.

Atlanta Braves (15-15 through May 2)
Tim Hudson (3-2, 3.48)

Like the Brewers, the Braves are a hyped team taking longer than expected to find its groove. But that doesn’t mean it won’t happen. Atlanta’s pitching staff has been stellar as ever, cracking the MLB top four in ERA, WHIP, strikeouts and quality starts. Tommy Hanson, Brandon Beachy, Tim Hudson, Derek Lowe and Jair Jurrjens have all been excellent for the most part.

It’s just the bats that have to get going. Martin Prado is no guarantee to snap out of his slump, as last season’s breakout came unexpectedly, but slumping sluggers Jason Heyward and Dan Uggla both have the pedigree to end their funks soon.

MLB Trends:
MIL are 7-2 in their last 9 Wed. games.
Over is 8-1 in ATL last 9 overall.
Over is 8-1 in ATL last 9 on grass.
ATL are 7-3 in their last 10 overall.

The pick:

Tim Hudson is a respectable 3-3 with a 3.57 ERA in eight career starts against the Brewers. Though Braun bats .385 off him over 13 career at-bats, the current Brewers haven’t done a ton of damage against Hudson. Fielder bats .238 with a homer. Rickie Weeks is 1 for 18.

The recipe points to a Braves win on Wednesday. Greinke is too unpredictable in his first start of the season following a nagging injury whereas Hudson has a proven track record against Milwaukee and is nice and stretched out at this point of the season.

We’ll place plenty of bets in Greinke’s favor later this season – but just not on his debut.

Brewers vs Braves prediction: Braves 5, Brewers 3
