The New York Mets try and hold on to a 4 1/2-game lead over Washington atop the National League East, and resume their pursuit of the franchise’s first playoff berth since 2006, when they start a nine-game road trip on Tuesday night with a two-game interleague series at the Baltimore Orioles.

Mets

New York arrives in Baltimore after being swept at home in a three-game series versus Pittsburgh over the weekend.

And while the Mets have not done well on the road this season, they will likely get an offensive boost, as first baseman Lucas Duda, who leads the team with 21 HRs, returns to the lineup after missing the past six games with back problems.

The Mets, however will still be without third baseman David Wright, who has been sidelined since April 14. He is expected to return next Monday.

In the meantime, New York will hope that pitching can keep them atop the division, and will send Jacob deGrom (11-6, 2.03 ERA ) to the mound in Game 1.

The right-hander goes for his team-high 11th victory after being unbeaten over his last six starts.

Degrom has not surrendered a single run in half of those games and struck out 10 in his last turn against Colorado. He held the Rockies scoreless over seven innings and is 5-1 over his last seven road starts.

Orioles

Baltimore continues its 10-game home stand after starting it with a four-game sweep of Oakland. With that, the O’s are hanging on to the second wild card spot in the American League.

Monday’s 4-2 victory of the A’s moved Baltimore five games over .500 for the first time since July 2.

The Orioles have played well at home (38 – 21) and will send right-hander Kevin Gausman, (2-4, 4.48 ERA ), who has pitched at least seven innings in three of his past four starts, to the hill on Tuesday to oppose deGrom.

Gausman struck out eight and gave up three runs over seven innings in his last outing, but due to the lack of run support, got a no-decision.

Before that he surrendered six runs in 5 2/3 innings to the Los Angeles Angels, which followed a pair of solid outings.

Gausman is 1-0 with a 1.50 ERA in six appearances at Camden Yards.

The Mets are playing well, and even though they have struggled on the road, I think deGrom’s road success carries then to a slim victory in this one.
