Odds to Win MLB’s National League Central

The NL Central has been dominated by the Chicago Cubs the last two seasons as they have clearly been the class of this division. While there have been some significant player moves by the rest of the teams to try and close the gap, it remains to be seen if it will enough to dethrone the Cubs.

Chicago Cubs -200: While shuffling their line up somewhat, this year’s team remains basically intact from last season’s team that won 97 games. There is no reason for me to believe the Cubs shouldn’t win this division, the big question for them will be can they get over the hump in the post season.

Cincinnati Reds +800: They have opted for youth over experience in some of their off season moves especially in the heart of their lineup. This may pay dividends down the road, but will not this year. For 2009 they should set their sights on becoming a .500 ball club.

Houston Astros +2000: Unlike the Reds, they are relying on aging veterans such as Carlos Lee and Miguel Tejada to carry the load. They were competitive last season, but without any solid additions and some key departures, they will take a step backwards in 2009.

Milwaukee Brewers +500: The big question mark for this team will be their pitching staff. Losing CC Sabathia is a major loss that cannot be easily filled. They will be hard pressed to replace his production and will have to rely on the strength of their hitting, which is never a good formula for success.

Pittsburgh Pirates +4000: The talent level on this team could be described as mediocre at best. They will struggle with their pitching and they will struggle with their hitting which all adds up to a potential 100 loss season.

St.Louis Cardinals +450: This is the only team in this division that could potentially push the Cubs for first. A big question mark will be how their bullpen holds up, but with a few breaks here and there they have a chance to make it interesting.

NL Central Prediction:

In reality there is no reason the Cubs should not win this division going away.

I just hope it isn’t all for naught as their poor, tortured fans deserve some success in the post season.
