Detroit
Over the weekend they took 2 of 3 from the Cincinnati Reds including a nice comeback win on Sunday Night Baseball. Even though these are two really old franchises I feel like there is still no juice for this matchup. Still, if Detroit is going to try and get back into the AL Central race than they have to have these games.
The Tigers should be able to keep their bats alive against a weak Cubs staff. Starter Max Scherzer is still trying to harness his stuff it seems but since his stellar 15K outing against Pittsburgh he has been just OK. The Tigers defense doesn’t help as most would agree that the combo of Miguel Cabrera and Prince Fielder at the corners it is far from great. Chicago
It says a lot about this team that the only thing to be happy about right now is the fact that Alfonso Soriano might be showing enough life in his bat to attract trade interest. This is the worst team in the Majors and if that deal, or any other happens, they could get a lot worse before they get better. They are not going to lose every game but it is getting harder and harder to identify situations to back this club.
For the Cubbies it is simple – score a few more runs and give up a few less and they just might win some ball games. This team is 27th in scoring and that is with unexpected performances from Soriano and Bryan Lahair. The pitching has been predictably bad with the 25th worst ERA despite Ryan Dempster being pretty fantastic. Starter Maholm has been the opposite, not even getting out of the 4th inning the last time out.
